Q: What is causing Severe Nausea?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 7th, 2006
Hi. I am desperate for some help. I have had tmjd for 6 years now, ever since I began orthodontics. I have seen various doctors for this condition and have gotten a little relief here and there but not enough. The pain is chronic and referred to my my head, temples and neck mostly, the jaw and tmj's themselves I can handle better. 2 years later I was in a car accident where the airbag hit my face hard, and a year after that I was hit open hand on the face, both sides, about a dozen times. It was not until the last incident that at some point I began having localized head pain as well. Little painful knotts on the head that never go away either. Also at some point I developed nausea.

I went to gasterintologists, neurologists, internists, nautropaths, and inner ear doctors. The gastologist only said my stomach is sensitive but it was not the cause of the nausea. The naturopaths thought it was migraines but since I don't have episodes I never knew when to take the medications. They said my eyes did not move properly. The inner ear doctor said I have hearing loss and hydrops, despite the fact that I was not dizzy, just nauseaus. They said I had too much fluid in my ear. He put me on diuretics but I only took them a short time because I get side effects so easily, nausea especially, and yet I am trying to treat just that.

Eventually after 2 years of this severe nausea it reduced to a bare minimim on its own. Mornings were still hard but that went away not too long after awaking and the rest of the day it was very manageable. I can never be in back of a car and sometimes I can't even be a passenger. This lasted a few years. Then a week and a half ago I went to a new chiropractor who adjusted my neck. Shortly after I left his office my severe nausea came back like it was a few years ago. Doing nothing I have nausea. Moving my head, neck, and eyes worsens the nausea. Scrolling on the computer, focusing on anything, drinking coffee, all make it worse. Eating and not eating make non difference.

I called the nurse at the inner ear doctors office and she thinks that besides hydrops (menieres) I may also have perilymph fistula. SHe looked at my old records and listened to my complaints and said that there is some baloon in the ear filled with water and that mine may have a hole in it where the water leaked and therefore causing me nausea. But she does not know for sure so I have to see the ear doctor she said. Last time I was in a few years ago they told me to be on the zone diet. I don't think it did enough. Also, today, there is no way I can take diuretics because a few months ago I developed severe dry eyes that are incredibly painful. I no longer can wear contacts nor have LASIK. So I worry they won't be able to help me again. And between the eye pain, tmjd related pains and now nausea I am going nuts.

Any help with the nausea would be very much appreciated! THANK YOU!!!

According to your long story of illness you can ask for a second opinion from another ENT specialist about the problem of the inner ear. You didn’t mention a CT-scan of the head, so I recommend you request one if you haven’t already. Contact eye lenses can cause dry eyes and/or infections, so you might consider to stop wearing them until the infection is cured. Then you may use commercial eye drops while wearing the contact lens.
