Q: Prostatitis: symptoms eliminated with antibiotics...am I fre
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 4th, 2006
I have had symptoms of prostatitis- frequent urge to urinate, weak flow, and chills and body aches- on and off for the past 3 months. Each time I am put on antibiotics (3x) the symptoms disappear. Would the fact that all the symptoms respond to antibiotics rule out prostate cancer?

Even when symptoms respond to antibiotic therapy, you still can’t rule out prostate cancer completely because both conditions, an infection and cancer, can exist at the same time. Prostate cancer can be confirmed or ruled out using several investigative methods: a rectal examination, ultrasound, CT-scan, laboratory analyses (acid phosphatasis, prostate specific antigen), and biopsy. You can consult an urologist for an expert opinion, diagnosis, and treatment.
