Q: Geographic Tongue

Reading someone else's posting reminded me of a question i've been wanting to ask. I finally found a name for a problem I developed everytime I flare up, geographic tongue. It's so named because of bald spots that appear on the tongue surrounded by raised ridges that are like ulcers that resemble continents.

Does anyone else get this? It's quite painful and makes it difficult to eat anything acidic, spicy, vinegary or not just plain plain.

Mouth Ulcers
Mia,

me again. When I was first diagnosed apparently I had mouth ulcers and my doctor gave me a liquid medicine to swish if they came back. I am not sure if this is what you are talking about as I didn't think I had mouth ulcers (canker sores, etc etc) and my tongue wasn't inflamed or anything.

Have you tried the lupus foundation of america website? Www.Lupus.Org

when I eat too much spicy stuff or even have strong peppermint lifesavers I get heartburn.

Hi mia...
Yes, I have done that before. I get the most awful tongue sores and/or "raw" areas. It'll take a while for them to heal. I usually use a mouth wash from the doctor or gargle with a mixture.

Hugs!

I went to a new derm last week and she looked at my tongue for a bit. It is my most painful symptom (i know, it could be worse, but still no fun!). She says that it looks like a fissured tongue to her, but it was looking pretty normal that day. On a bad day, it gets reddish purple, swollen, covered in bumps, and looks like lines running through it with no taste buds. The derm showed me a pic of fissured tongue in a book and it says that it is generally painless. When it gets bad (average of two or three days per week), I can't eat much of anything...Even the rough edges of toast and crackers bother it. She is not convinced that it is related to the lupus, but that was the first major symptom that had my gp sending me to specialists. She prescribed a liquid antibiotic to try when it gets bad. I'll let you know if it works.

Hi, it's mia
i find that when my tongue is even bothering me a little, if I stay away from anything with a bite it gets better faster. That means avoiding, at least for me, salad dressing or anything else with vinegar like pickles or olives, spicy food or anything with peppers, orange juice and other citrus, and yes even toast and crackers if it irritates. For me that also includes toothpaste and mouthwash with a kick. And remember, if coke can eat away the corrotion on a car battery, imagine what it does to you!

I've used those mouth wash rx's before, and unless it's an infection like thrush, I don't find that it helps except to numb it temporarily.

Good luck mia

Tongue Ulcers
I have just joined this group and am so glad to find that I not the only one with these awful painful ulcers on my tongue. Does anyone know what causes them and most of all what can you do to get them healed. I have one that has been on mine for approx. 6 weeks. I have used medicine that was given to me by my dentist and also a mouth wash of benadryl and pepto bismal. Seems nothing is helping it to heal. Any advice would be appreciated. T. Dove

Geographic Tongue / Gout / Lupus?
I'm not sure what's wrong with me. Several years ago, I went to the dr with multiple symptoms: gouty-like joint pain, patchy skin on my scalp, geographic tongue, etc. I have very sensitive skin, and have a family history of scleraderma (sp?) -- so, I was really worried about any type of inflammatory or connective tissue disease.

The only thing that came up was a slightly over the norm uric acid level, so my doc prescribed me 300mg of allopurinol once a day. I think this was a mistake on her part, since 100mg is the usual starting dose (i'm also a nurse).

Weird thing -- not only did I not have any more gout-like attacks after starting the allo (and my gout was not diagnosed with a joint tap, which is also the norm), but the skin irritations have greatly diminished, and for the most part, my geographic tongue has completely disappeared. All of the problems (including the gout or gout-like pain) will reappear if I let myself get dehydrated, but everything is pretty normal now.

My doc hasn't a clue, and hasn't really dug into any connections between the geographic tongue, or the fact that it disappeared after taking allopurinol . . . And to her, it wasn't a real problem to begin with. Of course, with anyone that has it, you'll know that geo tongue makes your tongue more sensitive to certain foods -- making eating not too much fun at all.

Anyway, i'm seriously thinking of changing my doctor this upcoming year . . . But, i'm not sure that i'll be able to find a doctor that will have the time or the curiosity to find out what is wrong with me (considering the limitations of modern healthcare). I've always suspected that I might have a mild form of lupus . . . But, I just don't have any clue. The allopurinol helps, but it's only supposed to help gout -- and gout isn't supposed to cause any of my other problems.

Ugh!

Happy to not be hurting in houston!
