Depo Shot Vs Patch
Posted: 01-25-04 14:16pm

I'm trying to do some research on both the shot and patch as a secondary birth control method for after I give birth.....I dont want anymore babies for a while after this one so i'm trying to figure out which is the best for me...I've narrowed it down to both the depo shot and the patch...If anybody can give me any pros/cons, advice, past experiences with either i'd really appreciate it!

Thanks,
vanessa

Ok well when I was 16, my ma put me on depro vera cuz she was scared and all but anyway in the 1st month of me being on it I gained 30 lbs I swear when my third month was up I never went back on it. If you look on the web it says 75% of women who go on it gain weight . That is the most common symptom. It's different for everyone though. My sister is on the patch and it has been working great for her. I dont know much about it though. I as well as you do not want to get pregnant for a while after I have my child so I am planning to breast feed and if all goes well I will have an iud which will last 5 years and it has no horomones so it wont affect the milk and it has a high protection rate against pregnancy but if I do change my mind and decide to bottle feed I will most defintely go on the patch because it is just like the pill except you dont have to worry about forggeting the pill ect. So good luck to you and let me know what u want to do. I think the best bet would be the patch. Good luck! ~erica.

I was on depo for a while I didn't like it.
They give that shot to men in prison to keep their sex drive down.
I liked the patch better.
From depo I never knew when my period was coming it would bam show up then go away than bam be right back than I wouldn't get it for months.
My arm or leg hurt so bad after the shot.
I got headaches.
And it has took me even longer to start ovulateing and being regular they said about 6 monthe try almost a year.
But for some of my friends they had no side affects.

Depo V.s Patch

I took the shot for 6months I had all of the side effects diareah nausa cramps spottig weight gain! The first 3 months I was on it I looked 5 mnths preg Sad it was easy thought its 99.7 % accuriate and u only have to think about it once every 3 months that means like 4 times a year but it wasnt worth alla the symptoms so I got on the patch and I put it on my but and it slowly fell off over a couple of days the patch it pretty simple but it caused sum skin irritation and if your patch isnt on prpperly it can definately increase the chance of pegnancy ...So if you chose the patch I would suggest putting it on your upper arm and switch arms every week to avoid skin irretation! :d

When I was on depo I was a wreck. I got a period for 2 weeks, 2 weeks off, then 5 weeks of a period. I only got one shot, needless to say. I would cry all the time. I’d forget a book for class and have to leave because i’d creak out in tears. And I slept constantly. Woke up, went to school, came home and slept. Everyone thought I was seriously sick. I actually lost weight on it though, about 10 lbs in the first 2 weeks. But I felt sick a lot so that could have been why. I never wanted to eat.
But i’d go with the patch. Trust me, it’s so much better.

When I was on depo I gained 15 pounds and was extremly depressed and cryed none stop. I had my period for 3 weeks at a time. The worst part is, once you get the shot you have to wait for it to leave your body. Theres no going back once you make up ur mind with this shot.

I have been on the shot for 13 years!!! I love it. It has taken away my terrible pms and periods. I did experience some weight gain, but with excercise, have been able to control it. Everyone is not the same. You may like it. I'm sorry to say that I am now having to go off of it as I am experiencing peri-menopause symptoms and am having to go to a low dose birth control pill for the time being. The hormones in the pill seem to help my depression, headaches, anxiety and tiredness that i've been experiencing over the last year due to the onset of peri-menopause. :(

I was taking the depo shot. And I gain alot of weight. And I exercise and ate right and everything but I still gained alot of weight. I used to weigh around 110 but now I weigh around 160. I spotted for two weeks. I also had headaches to now that I think about it. Also my heart would race a little more then usual. Hope this helps you some.

Where was it that you tried to put it? I put mine on my back-side.. But up towards the top near the top of my underwear (just low enough so that you can't see it.. But not too low cause then it can get too wrinkled). It may depend on how your body is shaped and where it crinkles the most. I don't think it has to be 100% flat as long as it is not raised off the skin...

I tried it on my backside as well but more towards the side and it definitely gets wrinkled. I think i'm goign to have to try and put it more towards hte center or on my back where there isn't as much of an issue.

On the Shot - Never Used the Patch.
Posted: 07-15-07 12:32pm

Razz
Ok now from my experience only. I am currently on the shot. Have been for the past two years. I got on it 5-6 weeks after I had my son. I love it. I did gain about 5 lbs.. not sure if it was from the shot or just me. I had a very slight clear/brown tint discharge here and there for the first 6 months then everything was gone and havn't had anything since. I got on it because I was always forgetting the pill and the shot is only once every three months. I was reading other replies and I didn't notice any emotional effects although I have heard of them. And I did have a friend where the shot made her periods worse. I would get the shot in my upper rear/low back - just where you start getting some fat. and it was a little sore the first day or so when i would get the shot, but nothing major at all. I guess it's just a chance. I am actually planning on getting off it since I want to have another child in the next year. That is the only other major concern to look at. I've been researching and found that in most cases it take a LONG time to get back to normal and i've read some where women have had a hard time getting pregnant after being on the shot. Reading them has made me sort of nervous but there were some good ones where they got pregnant right after getting off. I was on it before i had my son but only for like 3 months and I ended up pregnant in a few months and my period went back to normal. I have never used the patch so I can't comment on that part. But this is just some input on my experience with the shot. Overall view on it.. it's different with everyone, it may work great you may have problems. it's just a chance you take I guess. HOpe this helps! Good Luck!

i was on the depo shot for the 3 months and didnt see anything negative about it. i then switched to the alesse bc pill then went back on depo. the last time i was on depo i gained 60 LBS!!! yes 60. i went from a unhealthy weight of 125 to 180. WOW. i was underweight but now im just depressed with my body. i got off of it last september. i didnt have a period while i was on it. as soon as the date it was supposed to end came i was bleeding for a whole month and now im not at all. they told me today it will take me a year and a half to get pregnant. for some reason the fool doctors didnt tell me this before. so it kinda sucks because im married now and we are ready for a baby. Sad
