Is mononucleosis bacterial or viral? Does everyone get mono at some time? How does mono spread? Basic facts and definitions about "the kissing disease". ...
Do you know what causes mono? Although children are more at risk than adults, what can you do to avoid getting sick from mono? Review risk factors here....
The symptoms of mono may not manifest for everyone who contracts the Epstein-Barr virus. But when are symptoms serious? And when should you seek medical help?...

Alright... So i'm 17, in pretty good health, and 5 weeks into my first semester living on-campus. For about the past 3 weeks or so i've had a moderate sore throat, low-grade off-and-on fever, pain in (what feels like) my ovaries, and (most disconcertingly of all) an arrhythmia and chest pain and a possibly swollen right atrium.

In addition to that, I feel exhausted all the time. I could easily sleep 18 hours a day or more if my schedule would permit me to. My aunt and uncle (and apparently my immediate family now) have mono, and my aunt said some of my symptoms sound like hers. When I went to have the ultrasound done of my heart, my left rib was really sensitive when the tech touched it.

Can mono cause a heart problem, such as an arrhythmia or swelling? The test came out negative, but I know that mono tests aren't always reliable. Should I go home and get the ebv titer drawn?

yes, it can cause heart problems. I had worsening chest pains and numbness for weeks until I finally went to the er and they thought I was having a heart attack. It turned out I had viral myocarditis, (damaged my heart muscle). I was discharged from the hospital not knowing what caused the heart problem and a week later went back to the er and was diagnosed with mono.
