Q: My Tmj Story And ?'s- Help Please

Hey, all. Let me start my saying i've come here often and find this site very helpful. Thanks for that!

I have had jaw popping and tenderness in my jaw area since I was a teen. I'm now 32. The past 6 months have been a very trying and stessful period of my life, and this is when my new symptoms have begun. I believe I have been clenching in my sleep. My bite is also off. I sucked my thumb for a long time as a kid! :d

it started with ear pain-fullness and dizzy spells. The loud pop that I used to hear when I would open my mouth went away to be replaced by a crackling sound. I also had a sudden onset of a lot of floaters in my vision. I went to my regular doctor, and they said it was sinus stuff. After a few months and many sinus prescriptions later, I went to an ent. He said my ears look fine, and it's probably tmj. My next step was a dentist and possible physical therapy. (i also went to a chiro, who said definitely tmj, but that scared me, and I haven't been back.)

now i'm waiting for my dental appointment. He says he does tmj, so we'll see. (stinks that insurance doesn't cover this stuff- his treatment cost $825.00! Blech! Lol)

anyway, my current symptoms are ear pain and stuffiness, what feels like muscle spasms in my cheek (if I move my eye, sometime I can feel my cheek muscle twinge), and a lot of tightness around my eye(if I try to open my eye really wide, it feels tight and, well, just weird.) what is that about? Can tmj effect the muscles near your eye? I also have some eye pain. Is that normal for tmj? And a lot of tingling in my cheek and below my eye that seems to radiate from my jaw. I'm kinda freaking out, here. I still have jaw soreness and some pain where my back teeth are. Are floaters common at the onset of symtomatic tmj? I just want to take the left front quarter of my face off and replace it!

Like I said, stress in my life has been super high (divorce after 14 years of marriage, but that's a whole nuther story. Rolling Eyes ) thanks so much for any response. I really appreciate it! Smile

o, and also, when I lay down to sleep on my left side(problem side), I can kinda feel a squishy sound in my ear when I tighten that muscle by swallowing. It feels like fluid is entering my ear. When i'm up and about, it kinda feels like it is draining. Can your jaw joint swell with fluid that can drain into you eustation tube?

Thanks again!

Hey. Im a teen. And I have the same thign as you. It used to be really bad. Now its just making me sad. Anyways. I've had the dizzy spells. If you don't clench or grind then they go away. Yes tmj affects your eye alot. I get pressure in my eye some days when I grind really bad. Floaters are common I hear, fortunately I haven't experiencedd this! I sucked my thumb till I was about nine years old (no not in publc! Lol) but umm I think there must be some connection between bruxism and tmj. Ow my jaw hurts. I really odnt know how to stop this. Just telling u in advace that if you start to get weird symtpoms that scare u, tell me. I've probably experience them all. Good luck.

Dsnygrl - yes, tmj can cause a myriad of frustrating ear problems sadly. I have never really found help with my ears or sinuses except sudafed and actifed sometimes. I have learned to live with the problems. I now have tinnitus in my left ear and at first thought it was going to drive me crazy. But I have got use to it.

Bite splint and physical therapy (or even good massage therapy) is a good plan of action. Reducing your stress will help tremendously also. Reducing my stress by changing jobs was a god-send for me recently.

All your symptoms sound like tmj, i'm sorry to say. It's amazing what can happen to our bodies when the tmjoints get unbalanced. It could be a very interesting subject if I wasn't one of its victims.

I pray that you will get the help you need. Take care and
god bless...

Thank you both so much. I go to my first appointment with a dentist who specializes in tmj on thursday. I shall soon have my bite-splint. I pray that he will adjust it right. The last thing I want are worse problems. Thanks again. I really appreciate it!

Hey guys, i thank you for posting this because i have all of the above mentioned symptoms and didn't really know how to describe them because i feared the doctor or other people wouldn't understand. I started getting pain in the back of my eyes and have always had a sort of blocked nose feeling, burning of the throat etc. It was only when i thought back and remembered an inccident where i couldn't open my mouth properly that it all started to click together. That is when my eye pain started, the headaches in different places like temple, one side of the head started too. Has anyone got any advice as to how to cure this? Can you just get your jaw realigned and all the problems will go away? wishful thinking but it's really discomforting to live with.

Just wanted to let you know that you aren't crazy because most people can't understand what it is that you are going through. What I would recommend is that you make an appt with a myofacial pain doctor or a specialist that deals with TMJ. I have had TMJ for 20 years with the last 7 being the most painful. Luckily I had a doctor that truely believed and understood the symptoms and pain that I had. Try everything that you can to resolve the problems you have. On Oct 22nd I will be having the first surgery of my total TMJ joint replacements. I never in the world would have thought that I would be going through all of this so many years later but I believe I will get through it.
