Q: Chronic Hep B And Birth Control

I was diagnosed with chronic hep b 5 years ago Sad . I had an acute episode when diagnosed, but since then I have been in remission and the damage to my liver has been very minimal, thanks, in part, to avoiding alcohol, as well as medications that can damage the liver.

I recently had gastric bypass surgery which, was a risk, but not having it was a death sentence. Everything is going well, but due to the rapid weight loss, it causes a sort of hyper fertility. My husband and I have always used condoms and always will, but, getting pregnant right now would be very dangerous for me and a baby. So, I want to try to find something that I can pair up with the condom.

Does anyone take or know what kind of birth control is recommended. I talked to my doctor about the depo-provera shots, but they aren't recommended for those with liver disease. So I did more research and it seems that any kind of birth control medication has the same warning.

I don't want to take a chance getting pregnant, and I know condoms can fail. Plus, I don't think my husband will go for abstinence.

I appreciate any and all responses! Smile

Very Smart
I think it is great you are being so smart about this, because what is really important is your health and the health of a chid that you may concieve. I will tell you that I htink the best thing you could get is an iud. This has no medication whatsoever. It is just a small device shaped like a t that is insurted into your uterus and it prevents pregnancy for 7 years or more. It is wonderful. I had it and it was like it was not even there, and I had no side effects at all, not even a change in my period. You can get it and just forget all about it until you are ready to have a baby and then you can have it removed. Maybe you should ask your Dr. What he/she thinks about an iud. I think that whnet hey first came out, they got a bad rep, because they were made out of materials that promoted infection, but the material is different now and I don't think there are any threats of infection. I know I didn't have any problmes at all. The first thing I ever used was an implant in my arm, I forget what it was even called because it was so long ago, but it worked great for 3 years and then I had it removed and had my daughter a year later. Then I got the iud and had no problems at all, and had that taken out 2 years later and I am now trying for another baby. Smile so best of luck to you, and I hope youfind what is right for yourself!
