Q: Can Hypertension cause weakness in the joints?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 20th, 2006
Hi,
i know a 46 y/p african american lawyer with a case of untreated hypertension (bp:160/100). He recently had an isolated episode of right hand and wrist weakness when trying to open a jar. I told him to see a doctor, because I think it may be related to his hypertension, but he thinks it may just be a little carpal tunnel because of his job. I was wondering what anyone though of this.

It's not ilkely that high blood pressure (hypertension) can cause cramping, weakness, or pain in the wrist. Hypertension can cause headache, vertigo, pain in the neck or chest pain but not pain or weakness in the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome, however, can cause weakness or pain in the wrist.
