Video/sound Recordings of Schizophrenia

there's a bellevue (the mental institution in NY) documentary with some pretty good footage...im almost positive that schizophrenia was featured but its been a while since ive seen it.

Yeah, but that's not what I'm looking for, I've seen that already. I want footage of a schizophrenic in a psychotic state to use for class. I teach classes now on folklore, one of which is on vampires, and one day I go over schizophrenia to show how misunderstandings of mental illness were one of the primary sources of the development of the myths.

Not too bad, the voice thing is pretty cool. Not sure why they did this as as slideshow though, it makes it really, really and lame. Hardly frightening. Thanks for the help. I heard about the goggle thing, but if this is what it is, lame lame lame. Seriously, how hard would it be to make it a little film so you could feel like you were actually there?

...It's much more than just a slideshow. The slideshow is just a clip to give a brief example of a virtual reality video with headphones, etc that enables the viewer to "live" the complete schizophrenia experience. I do believe it's available to teachers.

The slideshow is very illuminating, though. I know it gave my family members just a little example of what my son has to experience and made them a bit more sympathetic.

I'm pretty disgusted with this forum already. So far, nearly every thread I've looked at is bashing modern psychiatry and how it tries to deal with the terrible illness. Would anyone ever suggest that a diabetic stop his insulin? Would they suggest that this same diabetic has the illness because of stress or a traumatic childhood?

People should research before they shoot their mouth off. Yes, I hate the fact that my son has to take powerful medications to control his illness, but the alternative, for him anyway, is death.

It would be nice to have, but unfortunately impossible to show to over 60 students, that's why I was looking for a video of some sort. I think the main reasons people bash it is that, unfortunately, the medicines to treat the condition are very detrimental to one's health. I've seen schizophrenics who have been on medication for awhile and they're total wrecks. In addition, one of the problems is that they're throwing out medications without really knowing why they work because no one has yet figured out the mechanisms behind the disease. Also, I've come across several people, myself included, who had schizophrenic symptoms that were all tied to a physical problem. I myself have a sugar imbalance, which if left untreated can lead to delusions, obsessions and so forth, which I in fact experienced. I used to think I was in the Truman show for awhile there. That's the other problem I have, psychiatry doesn't seem to realize that mental illnesses can often have easily corrected physical problems. What if, in your son's case, his symptoms are actually being caused by something physical that's not getting corrected? I'm not saying it is, but the first thing that is supposed to be done before diagnosing a mental illness is the patient must be cleared of any possible physical problems. The DSM-IV clearly states this, but unfortunately the majority of doctors skip this. If your son wasn't tested for anything, shame on them.

Thank you, Stan for your concern, but I have made it a point to become very educated about this illness. My son has childhood onset schizophrenia and has been in the hospital eight times since he was twelve years old and has made three serious suicide attempts. And yes, I made triple certain that there was no underlying physical cause through extensive diagnostic tests.

This is NOT a "disease of the week" or a fad. It's not something that comes and goes. Schizophrenia is a horrible brain disorder that affects approximately 2% of the population. Vitamins and a better diet won't cure the victim. There is no cure. Did you know that probably most of the street people you see are schizophrenics who have no one to care for them?

Perhaps someday the stigma and misunderstanding of mental illness, in particular schizophrenia, will fade and the general population will become more knowledgeable about this illness but I can see from this forum that day is far in the future.
