Q: Son's Night Terrors are Upsetting me...what is wrong? what
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 13th, 2006
My son is two years old. For the last week I have woke up to him crying loudly in his sleep. hen I go to him, he is tossing ang turning in his sleep and is hard to wake. I try to wake him for several minutes, and usually he opens his eyes and closes them back while he is still cying. I try comforting him, but all he does is kick me. He calms down after about ten to fifteen minutes. I put him in bed with me only to be woken up half an hour later with the same exact thing.Only while he is crying he starts kicking me. It almost seems like the kicking is just him stretching his legs out, like he can't get comfortable. He curls up and straightens out over and over. The whole time crying and not waking. I am so upset, cause I do not know what is wrong or what I can do to fix it. This all just happened out of no where.

Sleep Disorders Answer A1537
According to your son’s symptoms (“crying loudly and kicking in his sleep, difficult to wake up during the event”) it seems likely that he is experiencing night terrors. Night terrors are followed by vegetative symptoms (sweating, fast breathing, enlarged eye pupils…). Kids experiencing night terrors are difficult to wake up and become confused when they wake up. Further, a child in night terrors doesn’t remember his/her dream after waking up. Night terrors are usually not due to physical or mental disease. Night terrors usually occur after a stressful physical or emotional event. They usually vanish in time. Your son will need help only if his sleep becomes so disturbed that he can’t function during the day.

My daughter is goign thru the same thing
My 2 year old daughter is experienceing the same thing. Although she becomes more and more violent is i try to console her. She actually kicks and hits me and my husband as well as herself. I think she is awake but I cant be certain. It last about 15 to 40 mintues ans repeats all night long. I'm a zombie, getting no more than 10 minute of sleep at a time...is there a medical condition that can cuase this..

my 2 year old son is the same, he is totally uncotrollabe when he is having a night terror. my daughter suffered from them until she was 4 so my husband and i have been woke up every night for the last 5 years i am exhausted and at my wits end .our oldest son was fine but these two are terrible sleepers, and have awful tantrums they have both reduced me to tears.i can only hope my son grows out of them like my daughter did i feel like a failure as a mother and don't think anyone understands unless they have been through it themselves.I have had no support from my doctor at all they just tell you that you need a break.

Sleep walking, Night Terror, Sleep hallucinations
I have been experiencing extreme night terrors since I was about 8 years old, I am about to turn 26 and have found no effective way at preventing this debilitating sleep disorder. It has prevented me from entering every branch of the military and it is now looking like its going to prevent me from furthering my career in local law enforcement. I have tried several sleeping medications and have found some luck with them but have found no way to prevent occurrences on a daily basis. I have found myself in emergency rooms from punching out windows, I have tackled my mother and broke her leg while running around the house in a sleep rage, and found myself waking up in the snow outside. These are just a few of hundreds of stories with regards to my sleep issues. This is a curse and I would trade anything in the world for a cure or fix to the disorder. I realize this is an old post but if there is a Doctor or anyone out there that has some experimental or new treatment or just more information for me I would be eternally grateful. Please help me. If you are a parent and want to ask someone who has grown up into adulthood with extreme night terrors and sleep hallucinations email me as well. Thank you.
