Q: Could It Be Hypoglycemia???

I am 34 years old and have suffered from severe anxiety for the past 10 years. I have had no other health problems with the exception of prior obesity.

I have not been officially diagnosed with hypoglycemia but after reading the symptoms of hypoglycemia I can't help but wonder if I do have it.

In january, I started a diet called optifast. You may have heard of it.

Basically, I drank 5 shakes per day for almost 6 months and did very well on it. As a matter of fact, not only did I lose weight but my anxiety was just about gone, for the first time in a long time!

As I transitioned off of the shakes and onto "real" food, my anxiety is back far above the level before the diet.

My question, is the optifast diet a good diet for a hypoglycemic? The nutritional info for one optifast shake is as follows:

calories: 160
calories from fat: 25
total fat: 3g
saturated fat: 0.5g
trans fat: 0g
cholesterol: 0
sodium: 220mg
potassium: 460mg
total carbohydrates: 20g
dietary fiber: 0
sugars: 17g
protein: 14g

if the optifast shakes are good for a hypoglycemic, then chances are that I do have hypoglycemia and now that I am back to eating food, I am going to have to change my choices.

Thank you for your time.

Is anxiety the only symptom you are having? Do you notice after you eat you feel tired? If your meal is delayed do you feel weak like you could pass out? It is a possibility that your anxiety is resulting from diet. If you have not done a gtt (glucose tolerance test) then you can try stans diet on this forum and see how you feel. He has alot of knowledge on hypo due to his experience with it. The diet that you were on is probably alot better than what you are eating now, thats what could have possibly relieved the anxiety. However, the hypoglycemia diet wiould be low carbs, high protein, no sugar, and some fat. Very strict especially when starting the diet. Im sure stan will be on here to help ya.

There is sugar in my diet; in the fruits, vegetables and even the nuts to some extent. It's impossible to avoid all sugar.

I was refering to simple sugars. No soda, candy etc. It is impossible to find everything without sugar.

Oh, duuh! Stupid me. I forgot to mention, like he's suggesting up there, if anxiety is your only symptom, it may be doubtful you have hypoglycemia because it has a ton of symptoms associated with it. Most people have at least, i'd say, five symptoms common to them, with a few others cropping up now and then. If you only have anxiety and nothing else, it's doubtful, but you seem to be suggesting you have more. If so, what are they?

Dude, check that out, I totally htmled that word "only" up there, looks like this forum is able to do things like bold and such if you know the language. Sweet, now I can make my emphases and bolds and such more prominent.
