Q: What is a normal menstrual cycle on birth control? Should I
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 9th, 2006
I started yasmin 7 days ago as suggested by my gynecologist. i started it the day after my period started. i have been bleeding consecutively for 8 days moderate to heavy and i normally go 5 days with only 2 days heavy. i was told that on yasmin i would have only 4 day periods which is one of the reasons i went on it. does my body just need time to adjust? is it normal to bleed this much when first starting on birth control? thank you.

The duration of the menstrual period is highly individual. A "normal" cycle duration is considered to take from 3 to 7 days. Periods during the usage of birth control pills are not real periods because the body does not ovulate while using contraceptive pills. This period of yours was a real period but the next periods will be false. Maybe they will last shorter than 8 days; you will have to observe and record the periods on a calendar and then consult your gynecologist with the data.
