Really Strange..
Posted: 09-09-06 07:42am

Ok so last night something very odd happened. I noticed my vision was going blurry and my head was hurting, so I decided to try and get some sleep. Well about 10 minutes later my left hand started tingling, like when you get pins and needles, so I wriggled my fingers to try and get the feeling back in my hand. It didn't work and just got worse until it was completely numb.

This didn't freak me out, because i'd read that carpal tunnel syndrome is common during pregnancy and can sometimes cause numbness in the hands. But then I noticed that my bottom lip felt funny.. And sure enough it proceeded to go numb.. Followed by my top lip.. And then my cheek.. And my jaw. It felt like i'd had a local anaethestic done at the dentist! Next to go was my tongue.. And I was getting really confused at this point.

While that was happening, the numbness in my hand was spreading up my arm and when it got to my elbow, I got the feeling back in my hand.. But instead the rest of my arm went numb, up to my shoulder.

After a few minutes, most of the numbness stopped, and my jaw just felt funny for a lil while afterwards. My mind was taken off it, though, because I suddenly became very aware of the fact that I hadn't felt my baby move for a few hours. At night she's always wide awake, and usually kicks and wriggles all over the place.. But last night she was really sedate. So naturally, I really started freaking out.

I've felt her move since, but she's still not as active as she normally is.. And I now have a weird pain in my elbow. I'm really confused!

Go and see a doctor. That doesn't sound right to me. Maybe someone else here will know what that was but i'm worried it might be a symptom of pre-eclampsia. I really think you should get a proper medical opinion. Maybe ring .N.H.S .Direct? God, that's twice i've suggested that to someone - I don't get paid for it honestly!!!

zanny I completly agree could be symptoms of eclampsia/heart attack/stroke symptoms..

I will admit when I had panic attacks I had the same thing but get it checked out to make sure its not something more serious (pretty please.) if you dont feel baby move drink a glas off apple juice/any type of juice or even a pepsi and if you feel baby move dont worry.

I'm scared now! =( I told my mum and she just said "oh well, as long as it went away".. So I kinda figured it wasn't serious coz she wasn't worrying about it. I'll ring the hospital!

It's better to be safe than sorry but it's probably just a trapped nerve or something. Sorry, didn't mean to scare you! Think you're doing the right thing to ring the hospital - just in case.

Let us know how you get on.

Don't worry, it's a good thing that you brought it to my attention, I probably would have ignored it otherwise. Thank you!

My mum thinks i'm being stupid though and "worrying over nothing".. So she won't take me to the hospital. I rang them and they said it could be a trapped nerve in my elbow, which would explain the numbness in my arm.. (but not in my face!).. They just said I should see someone if it happens again.

Am glad everything's ok. Definitely go to the hospital/doc if it happens again then. Is your mum supportive of this pregnancy (if you don't mind me asking)? How old are you? Just interested, don't answer if you don't want to.

Yeah she is, it took a while but she's being supportive now.. She's just always like this with everything.. If she's never been through it or doesn't have proof that it's serious, then she dismisses it. I'm 17, and haven't passed my driving test yet.. Which is annoying, coz this is kinda situation where I just wanna jump in my car and go, for my baby's sake.

I'm sure once her grandchild is here she will melt!

Well, you're young but my mum was 16 when she fell pregnant and, despite huge pressure to have an abortion, she refused and stood her ground. She says having a baby was the making of her and from a personal point of view I am so pleased she did because if she'd had an abortion, my wonderful big brother would not be here today.

Best of luck to you girl!

i've been drinking apple juice and haven't felt much so far, only the odd kick.. She's so inactive and it's not like her at all.. She's usually so wriggly. I mentioned it to the woman I spoke to on the phone and she said it could just be because the baby has less room in there to move. It's still bothering me though =(
