Q: Optometrist Cannot Refract

I went to my optometrist today because I have been having vision problems: high contrast numbers (like black numbers on white background) are blurry at a distance, and seeing fine print from a distance is very difficult.
The optometrist I went to could not refract my vision to 20/20. I could not make out the chart and he was very upset. He kept asking me "what do you think the letters are" and I would guess and he said "don't guess" and I said I cant see them. He kept saying that since I haven't worn glasses and been wearing contacts for so many years my muscles in the eyes have become lazy. Is there anything that can be done for this? He has referred me to an opthamologist, and said frankly he has never had this happen before. Any insight as to what can be causing this, or has anyone had this problem?
