asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 3rd, 2006
Okay i have been taking birth control for like 3 years, i am on the sweet pills starting today that means i should get my period either today or tommorow and then start a new pack next sunday. The thing is i dont want to take them anymore, can i get off of them as soon as i finish the last one on the pack. the last timei had unprotected sex was like 1 week ago, i dont plan on having sex anymore but could i still get pregnant from the last week? if i dont start a new pack?

If you got your period, it seems likely that you are not pregnant and all risks from previous sexual intercourse become irrelevant. You can’t conceive during the next cycle from sexual intercourse experienced during a previous cycle (before your last period). If you were taking your pills as instructed, you can be 99% certain that you did not conceive during unprotected sex. So, you may stop taking pills as soon as you finish this pack. it doesn't seems that you have to take the last 7 inactive (“sweet”) pills. After you get your period, you are safe from pregnancy...but only as long as you have protected sex.
