While setting up my school schedule for this year the school counselor said I would have to go by and talk to every teacher on my list and ask them if it is okay to be in their class and that some teachers might not allow me and that they were allowed to do this.

I'm not sure this is true, do any of you know about any of this? It would be considered sexual discrimination (against me for being the gender that can procreate) if a teacher refuses to have me in their class. Or maybe is just allowing me to go to school enough? I'm pretty sure a teacher wouldn't have a right to refuse to have me in their class but it would be nice to think that the school counselors who help guide students futures know what their talking about...

It's more than likely to see if they have enough room for you. Some teacher's classes might be full, therefore you'd have to find an other teacher that teaches the same subject.

I don't think it is ethical for a teacher to discriminate again any specific gender, being that the people in their classes will be co-ed. (2 sexes)

what are you going to school for?

She specifically said some teachers might not want me in their class because of me being pregnant.

I'm still in high school. I have english, pre-school, art, history, and physics on my list this term, and next term through a program where I work from home i'm getting my last math another physics and then another grade 12 course, I haven't decided which yet. I want to study to be either an optometrist or a teacher in the fall. (though i'm considering waiting a year for university.)

the lady was so rude. She tried to put me into stupid math, and I was like "why would I have suffered through calculus all the years up until grade 12 just to take consumer math in my last year, which I can't even go to university with". Also, all the courses i've taken up until now have been the specialized ones instead of the generalized ones, and this term she tried to switch me over to all generalized courses because it "would be an easier load". My baby isn't here yet, and i'm not lazy, and I didn't become stupid the second I was impreganated. It is such a piss off, i've never failed a class, always taken all the hardest courses, always been on the honour roll and now they treat me like i'm an fool. It was a completely unpleasant experience dealing with the school this week.

That's very uncalled for on the schools part!! Did your mom or dad go with you? What do they think about the schools discrimination nonsense? Sometimes if parents get involved schools are more likely to back off and let things go in fear of making a scene. Not always, but sometimes they will back off if parents get involved. Good luck, and I hope your school years gets better!!!

I really don't think it's the school so much as this one particular crusty b*tchy counselor. I didn't get my dad involved, but if when I go by the talk to all my teachers I have a problem then I will.

I see. Yeah, some people have such miserable unhappy lives they have to act like that and try to make other people unhappy. It's pathetic! Yikes! It's almost 7:00 here and I still have to get to the bank before it closes!! Guess I better go wake up my little monster and get going! I hope this lady straightens up, if not maybe I can take a trip up to canada and visit her ;)

That totally bites! However, as a former teacher (in usa) I can tell you that school is not a democracy and you don't get "equal rights". In a publically funded school, you cannot discriminate admission-wise. In a private school you certainly can. As far as what teachers get which students, that's a very personal decision. Teachers don't like all students and may request to "not have them scheduled" into their class.

On the other hand, if a teacher has a problem with your pregnancy it's to your advantage not to have to see them on a daily basis anyways. The counselor might be doing you a favor.

Best of luck! I hate the "you're young & pregnant=stupid" stereotype. As if it isn't hard enough...
