Q: Hypo After Football

Hey guys,

after hours of research I myself have come to the conclusion that I have hypoglacemia. I've been to the doctors numerous times with the exact symtoms mentioned on here but am fobbed off every time and to be honest it really begins to annoy you.

I wouldn't say it's a severe case but I do tend to get it really bad after playing football. I have a proper hypo, and its horrible. One time it happened I measure my blood sugar level and it was at about 3 on the meter!!

My question is what ideally should I be eating prior and after playing football to avoid the hypo's?

Today I decided to test the theory. Straight after I played tonight I had a lucozade.....Hey presto, no hypo!

Also can someone put a link to the diet mentioned as I can't seem to find it. Sorry!! A list of good foods would be good as well!

Cheers,

martin

Hmmm, for high activity like that it may take awhile until you're able to do it without getting a low. Best thing is to follow it with some protein and fat and eat some before as well, like 30 minutes or so.

I have to eat protein right after I work out, if I run I get very dizzy and almost pass out. For me it is a major battle. I was taking some cheese to the gym and fruit to gave before and the protein to have right after. I still can't run though, I can last a 1/2 mile and I have to sit.

I would see a local endo to you or a nutritionist. There is also this book out there that might help you , I have yet to buy it but I really need to soon since I have been putting it off forever.

Are you eating enough vegetables, nuts and fat? That would help you. Also, beware, that one book that you're talking about on hypoglycemia.Org totally sucks, it has a lot of misinformation and other stuff that's just silly and pointless.

Just thought i'd give you an update people.

Have now played football 3 times since changing my diet a few weeks ago.

Overall i'm feeling so much better.

My worst sin was not eating breakfast. Now I don't leave the house until I have a big bowl of bran flakes. I used to feel so crap in the mornings (foggy head) but feel so much better now.

This has helped my football as well. Touch wood I havent had a hypo after football since.

Generally my diet consists of more protein now.

I'm tryin to cut out coke and fizzy drinks(it's criminal how much sugar goes into these!!). Is it ok to drink diet fizzy drinks?

Cheers

Diet drinks might mess with your blood sugar for a while, as your body expects sugar and doesn't receive any! It's some strange psychological phenomenon that i've never really given much thought to.

Try a diluted juice mixed with some seltzer. Not right away of course... But if you're desperate for soda, or if it's a special event, it's a much better option than straight soda or even straight juice.
