Q: Am I using the OPK (ovulation predictor kit) correctly?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 31st, 2006
I was wondering if a women can ovulate 2x's during a cycle or at seperate times per ovary per cycle? My questions is warrented by the fact that on CD6 (BBT was 97.9) I got a positive OPK and ferning, as this was the last day of my period, I didn't necessary notice any cervical fluids. Two days later my BBT dropped to 97.2 and has flucuated between 97.5 and 97.7. Today is CD14 and I have ferning and positive OPK. Cervical fluid is watery and abundant. My cycles are approximately 25 days, unsure of my luteal at this time as we are on month 1 of TTC. Thanks for you consideration.

Usually women cannot generally ovulate twice during a menstrual cycle or at separate times per ovary per cycle. Two simultaneous ovulations are possible, but are rare occurrences. It seems that you are confused because the ovulation predictor kit (OPK) you used was positive twice during the cycle and has left you are wondering if you had 2 ovulations at different times. OPKs detect the luteïnisating hormone (LH) in the urine. LH is always present in the blood so the ovulation test is always positive no matter the day you administer the test during the menstrual cycle. But several hours before ovulation occurs, the level of LH increases rapidly and decreases rapidly (it peaks quickly). During this peak, the line on the OPK is darker than usual and this is considered as a true "positive". So the next time you administer an ovulation test, pay attention to the color of the line and its intensity compared to the referent line on the kit.
