Q: Stage 2 Colon Cancer: will I Lose my Menstrual Cycle?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 31st, 2006
Doctor Question
I have been recently diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer, had the resection and now I am receiving the Folfox treatment (5fu, leucovorin, and Oxiplantin) Do you know if I am going to lose my menstration cycle, some possible side effects? I already had my first dose of chemo and it was not that bad -- some N/V, lip tingling, fatigue - but overall ok == I am really interested in my cycle? any ideas?

You may lose menstruation during Stage 2 colon cancer, but not necessarily. Regardless, your fertility will decrease in time because chemotherapy harms germinative cells very much. Chemotherapy has a negative impact on all cell types that reproduce quickly (germinative, embryonal, bone marroy, hair follicles, intestinal mucosa etc.). Vomiting is the most common side effect from chemotherapy. Hair loss, sterility, diarrhea, infections, bleeding, anemia etc. occur later.
