Q: Urethritis: Burning sensation during Urination
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 31st, 2006
Hi, I am a college student and my personal time is very limited. I have a situation and I don't know where, who, or how to handle it. I have noticed that I get aburning sensation in my penis after I urinate and a little while urinating. I also notice some type whitish or yellowish film or residue that comes out of my penis if i squeeze the shaft of my penis. Before all of this came along I had a lot of itching around my penis and genitals and it even went around to my butt. I don't know what approach I should take about getting checked out or what should I be checking for. I am a very busy college student and I am away from home so it makes it hard for me to get around to get checked out so I looked for solutions on the internet. If you can give any suggestions or answers it would be greatly helpful and appreciated. Thanks

According to the symptoms you describe (burning sensations in the penis during or after urination and discharge from the penis) it seems that you are experiencing inflammation of the urethra (urethritis). Urethritis is a low urinary inflammation and it is usually caused by an infection. Nonetheless, urethritis may also be caused by an allergy or irritation; these possibilities may be also considered. Infective urethritis is usually sexually transmitted (via unprotected sex) but not always. Yellowish discharge indicates that you might be experiencing infective urethritis and an antibiotic treatment might be requested. Without proper treatment, the infection can spread to the upper parts of the uro-genital tract (prostate, testicles, bladder etc.). A microbiological smear from the urethra has to be done to identify any possible infective agents and to choose the proper antibiotic. You have to visit your GP (general practitioner). S/He may send you to a dermato-venerologist or urologist if necessary.
