One of the most severe long-term micro-vascular complications of diabetes is diabetic nephropathy that leads to kidney failure. Diabetic nephropathy can be prevented (or delayed) by:
1. good control of the diabetes (glucose blood level);
2. efective treatment of the hypertensia (if present);
3. diet with reduced protein intake;
4. stop smoking, and
5. regulation of the blood fats.
Diet for preventing diabetic nephropathy includes:
- protein restriction (less than 20% of the whole calory intake);
- fats restriction (less than 30% and unsaturated fat acids should dominate);
- carbohydrates remain the greatest energy sorce (50-60%). Carbohydrates rich with fibers are recommended.
