Q: Bone Grafting: What, When And How?

I read something today about jaw bone atrophy. I think that is happening to me. The structure of my face is changing slowly; my smile is different, I cannot kiss my children because my mouth won't purse right anymore. I am very afraid. I know I have tmd, but I didn't realize my jaw would rot while I was still alive. I really need advice about this, I have nowhere else to go. Has anyone here had bone grafting done? Did it work? I need so much dental repair, but I don't want to spend thousands of dollars filling teeth that I will ultimately lose when my jaw disappears.
I am so confused, I don't know the terminology. Please help

Not sure my story will make you feel any better but here it goes. I've had 3 surgeries because of tmd. My bones are degenerating more all the time, i'm only 39! I've been dealing with this for the last 12 years. The first two surgeries were grafts to reconstruct the cartilage that disappeared. Each only lasted one year. The third one the surgeon took a chunck of muscle from me, shaved off my skull and my joint bones and placed the muscle in as cartilage. It's been 5 years since that surgery and I thought I was on a roll. Until three days ago and now I have some sort of cyst or calcium deposit that is causing me pain and swelling. My tmj surgeon retired and tells me the nearest tmj specialist he would recommend is in florida, i'm in missouri. My suggestion to you, don't wait, and make sure you have the very best tmj surgeon you can find. Do your research, don't take no for an answer and make sure he/she knows what they are talking about. Only you know your body and if it hurts, things are changing, something needs to be done. Good luck! If you want more info, feel free to write me!

Hi
I am on my 4th operation, the first was a bone graft and did not work, and the 2nd and 3rd op didnt work either, I had my last surgery 4 weeks ago so dont know what the outcome is yet. I am becoming very bitter, so do not have surgery unless its the last resort (as mine is).

Bless sammi
