i'd call your doctor... I don't know if these are normal reactions but you sound feverish, which is not too good. Please call the place you had the procedure done at and talk to them! In fact, if you want un-biased care (ie, from someone who won't immediately chalk this up to an after-abortion effect) go to the er; then they will actually try to diagnose you and not just say "oh it's just the abortion". Call the clinic you had it done at first; if they're not helpful then go to the er or a doc who doesn't know.

Thank you eiri! I have pretty well come to that conclusion. I went on google and looked up profuse sweating after an abortion, and couldn't find too much to substantiate that this was entirely normal. It wasn't listed under any of the sites that I went to to view "side effects of an abortion". To freak me out even worse, there was a lot of information that you are at risk for getting tetanus after an abortion! Yeah, that's what it said which I think is crazy, but then again the last time I had a tetanus booster was after a car accident in 98, so I should be okay either way, and I am taking my antibiotics. My husband thinks my body was going into shock. I took my tempurature, and it was 95.7, but I had just drank something, so my husband said it was affected by that. I took it again about an hour ago and it was 98.8, so I guess it's not fever related. After drinking a glass of water, and putting a heating pad on my abdomen, I was able to walk to the couch and stopped sweating and felt fine within a half hour. Maybe I was just severely dehydrated or something, which caused the cramping to be worse. Who knows! I am bad about going to doctors I will see how I feel over the course of today and if it happens again tomorrow morning, I will definitely go to the er.

Okay so here is one for you, I called the clinic where I had the procedure done and they said it wasn't that common and told me to call another clinic and speak to the doctor there. So I did and with barely a ten second answer, he said it was a side effect of the doxycycline I was on and that was all the more he said. I looked up doxycycline and didn't see anything on the sights I checked out about having sweating chills. Am I being fed a line of b.S. And being brushed off?

Take your temperature with a thermometer... Fevers a few hours after an abortion from infection is rare, because you are taking antibiotics, and infection takes a while to set in.

Your hormones are going down fast, this will also cause sweating and hotflashes! Doxycycline can cause sweating yes..

Take your temp, if it is above 100 then you may have a problem..But it is normal to have hot flashes after an abortion due to the hromones.

You know..The side effects of cramping etc after an abortion do go away fast!

I was iv sedated for my abortion, so I never had cramps at all because the pain medication lasted for awhile..

Call your pharmacist, sometimes tey are better to talk to instead of a dr in regards to medication!

So I spoke to a local pharmacist, who looked up all the info on the side effects of doxycycline, and she told me that hot and cold chills and sweating was in fact not a side effect of the drug. I have also been having bouts of fever since yesterday afternoon, which has yo yo'ed from between 99.1 and at it's highest 102.3. I told the pharmacist that I had been told that it wouldn't be an infection yet, as I was taking antibiotics, but she said I could be unlucky enough to be dealing with something viral that antibiotic won't knock out. What's funny is as my fever has gotten higher, my pain has lessened and I am starting to feel a little better. Am I just some freak of nature? I have to return to work on monday. Hopefully i'll be well enough. I was having a low grade fever even before I got the abortion, the first time I went, it was 99.6 at the clinic. So maybe I was already fighting something else, and now it is kicking my bum because my body is weak from what it's been through. Thank you to all of you for your responses. This experience has however really made me feel like the doctors at the clinics give two *&%$'s about the patients they see. I really hate being misinformed by someone who did such a procedure on me. Makes me pretty angry. I feel brushed off. They got their release form for future damages and their money for the procedure. Why should they care?

If you had a fever before the baoriton, they should not have done it until you were healthy.

It could be viral! If you were fevered before the abrotion it was most likely something dealing with you already being sick.

Which clinic did you go to?

There are a lot of caring clinics around, and the nicest clinics offer asleep sedation to all of their patients!

I would have reccomended a good clinic to you if you asked, I am sorry that this happened!
Not all clinics are caring and nice, and fortunately I know the ones which are very nice.

I went to a clinic in hagerstown, md. I am not saying the experience was all bad, there were a couple of very kind women there. The doctor honestly never spoke all of three words to me the whole time I was there. I was a little appalled at the fact that they didn't offer the "twilight drug" but that was only at first. The procedure went incredibly quick, like they had said it would, and they said that was the reason they don't give the drug. They don't feel it is needed. For someone like myself who is very weary when it comes to drugs (i don't drink and haven't tried drugs because I don't like not being in control of how I feel) I think I may have been more scared blacking out or possibly hallucinating than just getting it over with. I guess overall my biggest complaint about the clinic I went to was my phone call and being given what the pharmacist I spoke to said was misinformation. I guess really though I am not sure since they had me call their "sister" clinic that it was even the same doctor, and I don't even know what clinic I called. You live you learn. I pray to god that I never have to go to a clinic again! But thank you for your concerns.

Hey carifairy one question for you or if anyone else knows, the nurse or receptionist I spoke to before she referred me to call the other clinic started to say my symptoms could have been caused by some drug they gave me to make the uterus go down. I don't remember the name of this drug, but in any case, they did not give me any drug to cause the uterus to contract. Should I have had this given to me? The sonogram they took they measured and said I was five weeks. Maybe too early to have needed this drug? Just curious. Thanks.

Dang it sounds like you had a hellish expereince...

Most clinics that do not offer the twilight drug or 'good drugs' do not because they do not have the right kind of staff to do it..I would not go to a clinic like that, because I wonder how trained their staff really was...

If(obviously I hope not!!) you ever need a lcinic again, I promise that I know of better places where the doctor actually talks to you..

Methergine is a drug which helps shrink the uterus down, sometimes they will give you some pills directly after an abortion in the recovery area, was this done for you?

"methergine" or "ergonovine" two different names due to generic drugs.... Is normally given after all abortions..That and an antibiotic.

I know you had your abortion there, but perhaps maybe I should give you the name and number of aother clinic..Maybe they could see you or give you some advice.. Remember, receptionists can be 'crappy' sometimes, mainy because they answer so many calls... But you may need an office visit somewhere else.

Mehtergine causes leg cramps, and I will admit I was having hot flashes 'slightly' after my abortion, but it is ormal for you to be worried!

Perhaps you should make a follow up appointment somewhere else..The clinic I work at gets women calling for a follow up even though we did not do the abortion, mainly because it is a nicer place..

this clinic is supposedly great, as I have known 5 women who used them.. They make sure you are comfy! You can choose which 'sedation you want' with no extra charge.... Their office is clean too...

The main worry with abortion could be an infection, but since you have antibiotics, it is less likely =) it would be more likely that you were sick already when you went in =(

how is your bleeding? Remember this tip, "the more you walk around, pick up heavy objects or do strenuous exercise, the more you will bleed"
so definately try and relax =) I propped myself in a recliner and chilled for 2 days ;) good excuse to have my man to wait on me ya know.

Infections are rare nowadays because of the antibiotics they gave you..But if you were going to get one, they normally occur 1-1.5 weeks after.. But you are on meds, so it is unlikely..

You can take tylenol, just in case noone told you..No aspirin like bayer though, aspirin thins your blood and can make bleeding worse.

Carifairy, thank you for all your responses and for caring about my situation. I am now really starting to think I made a bad choice in clinic. They didn't give me anything except an ibuprofen twenty minutes before the procedure. They also didn't give me any pill to make my uterus shrink, only a little pack of doxycycline for the road. I actually felt quite a bit better this morning, day three after. What's strangest is last night before I went to bed, my temp was again at 100.4. This morning, only having taken midol with 200 mg ibuprofen in it, I am down to 98.0. I feel like my body can't make up it's mind. Oh here is another funny, though not really, story about this clinic. They have their bathroom outside the door of the facility (it's in like an old business area that's kind of like row homes, so I don't mean outside to the street, it was outside in a hallway) and there was a little door that you put your urine specimin in. Well, after they had taken me back, and I was in a room where I had just gotten my blood drawn and she was performing the pregnancy test on my urine, a guy had gone in the bathroom and was able to completely open the door to see into the room I was in and he laughed and said "i see you!!!!!!" it didn't really bother me that second, but i'm a pretty easygoing person. But someone else may have been mortified. Cari, do you think I should go to a regular doctor and see if I can get the medication to shrink my uterus, or is it past the point to bother? I think maybe that is where some of my tenderness is coming from. I know I am swollen or just my upset stomache from the antibiotic is causing me to bloat, but I can't fit my pants. I had to go up a size. Doubt i'll be able to get into my work clothes tomorrow.

Hey I didn't answer your other question. I am not bleeding at all. But then I have been sleeping for the past two days.

Dramaqueen, I do hope that you make your follow-up appointment elsewhere and explain why. I do agree with .Carifairy, and that is if you were spiking a temp that they should not do the procedure but their are times when I am worried that my temp will go up. It seems like alot of surgeons have poor bedside manner, they just get in their, do their thing and move on. If you have any questions, you should write them all down, such as your temp, bleeding meds you were given or not or any other questions so that you will not forget any, I am sorry you were treated like you were! I hope you get better soon snd find out what is going on!

The medicine to shrink your urterus is not 'required', it is not detrimental to your health to not have it, but most clincis offer it because of the advantages..
You were very early, and you have stopped bleeding, so those are both awesome signs that you are recovering well!
Methergine right now would not do do anything for you, your uterus does shrink down on its own, but the medicine gives it a helping hand...
I would say that for a follow up visit you should seek a new doctor, that way you may have more questions answered..

If you are starting to feel better, it is a good sign, because with an infection would would feel worse with each passing day.

All you had was ibuprofen... In my clinic they prefer iv sedation or asleep, and most women do..But some women who arebreastfeeding choose to stay awake so that the drugs don't go into their milk... I know being awake sucked, because if a woman who has a baby says "you know, it sucked, but not as bad as childbirth"..Man..

It is good to know there are nice health care professionals in this world!!!! And nice people in general, you have all been great. I finally actually got up and made breakfast today for the family, and went to do some shopping I desperately needed to do! I am a little tuckered out at the end of my day, but my temp I just took is 98.6!!! Whoo hoooo! It's good to just be tired and not sick. I think I am going to be okay, and I am going to make my follow up at a different clinic. I am actually looking forward to going back to work and getting some normalcy back to my life. I know I will never forget or fully put this behind me, but I feel like I can go on and not dwell on it. I will also surely see all of you around in this forum, as I have been helped I plan to stick around and help others. It's such a life altering thing. Thank you eiri, sandy allen, carifairy,fatfamily, and anyone else who has responded to any of my posts. Hopefully I won't need to make any more of my own posts here.....
