Q: Broken Rib

Hi, ive got some bad bruising on the side of my body on the rib. Could that be a broken rib, or do broken ribs only occour with the ribs near the chest. I read alot of artciles on the internet and they said a broken rib usually hapens when you get hit hard in the chest, but I got hit hard in the side, so does that mean my rib isnt broken?
