Hernia Forum - Inguinal Hernia

Hi, I have had a small (nickel-sized) non-painful lump in my groin for about a week. It only appears when I pick up something heavy, or become hot and sweaty. I can mash it back into my stomach with my fingers and it will stay there for a while and they come back out if I resume physical activity. I believe I got it from lifting some heavy boxes next week and turning (not pivoting) while lifting them. There has been no pain so far, just a little worried. By the way, sometimes there is no bulge when standing, it will only protrude when I cough hard. Does this surely sound like a small inguinal hernia?

Now the part I am most concerned with is the surgery. I am terrified of general anesthesia (thanks to a 4hour knee surgery last year) and I read where most small inguinal operations involve local anesthesias. I would really prefer a local over general. Will the surgery center provide this request? People that have had the anesthesia for this surgery, what was our experiences like?

Yeah, it sounds like a hernia.
I had mine operated on july this year, with general anesthetic, I would prefer to have general rather than local, all I can remember is the doc talking to me about something on tv, and the next minute I was in bed on the ward.
The clinic should meet your request, although sometimes general is required.
Your pre op assesment nurse will let you know if you can have local,

It definitely sounds like a hernia. Go see a doctor asap--an experienced hernia specialist. Mine started small, but my family doctor acted like it would be no big deal--that I didn't need to see a specialist. Take my advice. Go see a specialist before you have more complications. I just had my fourth operation (bilateral repair)--both sides! One hole was bigger than a silver dollar--a huge hole! The last operation was done laporoscopically--small incisions where mesh is inserted into the abdominal cavity.

However, even with this surgery I am feeling worse off now that ever before. I always have sharp, burning, numbing, tingling discomfort.

Get checked out. Have it fixed while it's small! Otherwise, you may end up like me--wondering if one day i'll ever feel a moment's peace without pain.
