1. Stripping the membranes. Its when you phisician runs a finger or two between youe amniotic sac and your cervix, seperating thetwo. This releases hormones that can help bring on labor.

2. Induction. It can happen a few different ways. One thing they use is cervidil. Its a small tablet they insert in your vagina and you have to lay still for about 30 mins. It is used to soften your cervix. Also pitocin. Its a drug given by iv to start contractions. It can make contractions more painful and doesnt always work. A lot of doctors will also break the bag of water if you are dialated enough to help labor progress.

Induction is basically medical intervention to start labor

When I was induced, they gave me an .I.V with the synthetic hormone .Pitocin in it to start contractions. You have a needle/catheter thing in your arm attached to a bag of fluid. They might also use a tablet or gel to help ripen your cervix.

Stripping membranes means your doc (or whoever) will separate your bag of water from where it's attached to your cervix. This is done during a pelvic exam, usually with his/her finger. I never had it done, but it's supposed to be uncomfortable.

Your membranes is another word for the bag of water that the baby is in.

Ic.. Thanks that was helpful I was curious lol.. That sounds like stripping of the membranes would be an unpleasent experiance.. Apparently I might have to b induced because of my high hcg level... But yeah... Ivs scare me lol.. But I guess if thats what they have to do, then they have to do it lol... I just gotta suck up

My midwife stripped my membranes and I didn't find it painfull or even uncomfortable - mind you by that stage I didn't really care :-) some women find it painful and some don't its different for everyone.
