Q: Slow-Motion Sensation keeping me from nights out with friend
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 18th, 2006
"Sometimes i get this very strange sensation, where everything I hear around me seems to slow down and my hearing becomes very sensitive. Ie my heart beat/breathing/sounds becomes very loud. I had this sensation once when i was around the age of 8 on holiday, but i have noticed it happens whenever i listen to loud music with a fast rhythm, more specifically when i'm in a nightclub. The only way I can decribe it is every sound I hear around me seems to slow down into a kinda slow motion which has a common, dark, recognizable rhythm to it." - this is quoted and is explained better than i could have explained it.

Is there anyway that this could be related to my anxiety? It's kind of disturbing and preventing me from nights out with friends. I've had a bunch of tests incuding Head CT, MRI, Bloodwork, Neuro exams, eye tests, EKG, along with others (to rule out sinister causes for headaches and dizziness which was diagnosed as anxiety)

Thankyou for your time.

When all clinical and para-clinical examinations are normal and read ok, then the only possibility left for the symptoms you describe is anxiety. You don't have give up from going out with your friends at night but can definitely avoid consuming too much alcohol. People your age are faced with many challenges in their lives and sometimes it is not easy to handle all the problems. It is not easy to explain anxiety’s origin because every person is a specific case for him/herself. A mental health professional may help you more.
