My Mother Has Cervical Cancer Posted: 08-15-06 11:44am
As some of you girls may know, I had a
breast cancer scare a while ago which has
thankfully been ok so far but now I have
recieved some devastating news that my
mother has the beggining stages of
cervical cancer.
She had an abnormal smear a few months ago
so they did a coloscopy where they
examined her cervix under a microscope and
took a small piece of it away to analyse.
At the time the doctor said it will be
nothing to worry about and just wait for
the results.
Well today mum had a letter stating she
has cin 3 which is severe abnormal cell
changes where the whole cervix is covered
and she is being rushed in at 10am on
thursday to have a loop excision to remove
all the cells.
They will analyse at the time if the
cancer has spread and then we will have to
see what will happen next.
Please if anyone has expierenced this or
knows someone who has reply and let me
know what happened. I'm posting it on the
cancer forum too but I know you girls so I
thought you may be able to help.
Thanks.

Oh, i'm sorry sweetie. My sister (only
19) is going through the same thing. She
had the abnormal smear and is waiting for
the results. At this point the doctor
told her that if it turns out to be
cancerous, they'll go in and "freeze" the
cells, so they are no longer able to do
anything. Other than that, I really
don't know anything about it.

Your mother should be fine! A leep
procedure is very safe, so don't worry
about it too much. She should not smoke
or exercise at all during recovery. If
she is a smoker then it would be a good
idea to quit all together because she will
have a 200% chance of having to go through
all of this again. For some reason
smoking can make it come back. They will
have her come in to do pap smears twice a
year now too make sure it hasn't come
back. Don't worry. She'll be fine
after the surgery, they will probably
prescribe a couple of percocets to help
with any pain. She'll be back to normal
in like 2-3 weeks.

Cin 3 is not cancer. It is pre-cancerous
cells. However they do not always turn
into cancer. Unless it is abnormally
aggressive, it takes many years for cancer
to develop.
A .L.E.E.P is a very common procedure and
cervical cancer is among the most
treatable cancers. Cervical cancer is
directly related to the .H.P.V virus (not
the kind that causes warts, the high risk
kind. Although you can have both kinds.)
that is sexually transmitted. No one is
sure the amount of people who have .H.P.V,
the estimates are in the 80-85% range of
sexually active individuals.
Interestingly, celebate people (nuns) do
not get cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer is not inherited, so you
wouldn't have a higher risk of having it
because your mom did.
In about 4-6 months she'll have another
pap smear to make sure they got all the
bad cells. L.E.E.P is so effective (i
cannot remember the percentage...But near
90, I think) that usually only one
'treatment' is needed.
I hope your mom is doing ok! I know it
can be scary. Good luck to her.
Ps. She can exercise a few days after the
procedure. It is an easy recovery and
quite simple.

Thank you so much for your replies girls.
You have relieved my worry alot. I didn't
realise the loop had such a good success
rate. Also my mother have never smoked in
her life so she should be ok from that
perspective.
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that
everything goes ok for thursday. I'll be
going with her so I have to be strong.

I wish the best for you and your .Mom I
had some type of loop but still had to
have a hysterectomy after that but I will
be positive for your mom and you and let
you know that my thoughts and prayers are
with you both. I lost my .Mom with
cancer when I was 7 so I know how special
moms are especially after having a hateful
alchoholic step-mother that did not want
to raise anymore children but my sister
was okay because she was 13 and raising
her grandaughter and great-grandson is
okay, but that is okay, I still had my
grand-mother at the time. I had stomach
cancer at 30 and it is gone to but I still
have to have pap-smears yearly for the
cervical cancer.
All the best to you both!

Beck I love you. Im sorry. They say
99.9% of cervical cancer is caused by hpv
and that 80% of people will get it at some
point in there lives. Men can carry it as
well as women. It has over a 100
different kinds of strains and some carry
the cancer, some go away, and some cause
genital warts. Not all are passed
sexually my dr said you can pick it up as
a small child thru warts on your hands.
When you find out you have it they perform
a coloscopy and if they see need they take
a biopsy. There are a few different
levels.. And a few different ways to get
rid of the abnormal cells on your cervix.
They sometimes laser, freeze, or cut off
the bad cells. But not everyone gets to
that point. Its a great reason why
everyone woman should get paps regularly
even if not sexually active because it can
take up to three years to get a abnormal
pap from it. Since there is little blood
flow thru the cervix, cervical cancer is
one of the easier cancers to treat and I
hope your mom is okay. In the beginning
of june they came out with a vaccine for a
few of the cancerous strains. I found out
I had hpv at the beginning of my
pregnancy. My colosxopy came out okay but
its something you have to keep checking
on, they will do another pap and see
what's up after the pregnancy is done..
Only 15 more weeks for that hah.
Hopefully your mom will be okay after all
the bad cells are gone I luv you babe.
