Q: Any Advise Would Be Appreciated Pls.

Two months ago, started a period of collapsing and starting into space and on the 24 july was diagnosed with epilepsy by the hopsital.

Since that date, I have had 3 seizures - the last being last wednesday.

Before the seizures, I feel cold and just before have terrible shivers and then collaspe, stare into space and my upper body shakes - all over in about 3 minutes and then takes me about 10/15 minutes to come around and I fall asleep.

Today, after having some results of a fasting blood test, my doctor has said my bm level is low and am having a non fasting blood test on thursday.

On the blood test card which I handed into the receptionist at the doctors he had written hypoglacemia.

My father is a diabetic, so know about hypos.

If I am, surely I would need some form of glucose, drink or food to raise my bm - I dont. Could this be contributing to my seizures.

Many thanks

Andy: if you were diagnosed with hypoglycemia, you probably need to change your diet. Please look at stan's diet posted on this board as "stan's diet version 8".

The last thing you need is a sugary product. The would lower your blood sugar levels even further. (i know what you were thinking - diabetics that experience hypoglycemia are told to drink orange juice - but this is not entirely the same situation). You need to cut sugar and starch from your diet.

As for the epilepsy, I can't offer any advice. Did the hospital give you medication for it?

Cheers for that mate.

Yes I am on meds for my epilepsy, maybe I am just trying to relate epilepsy and hypoglycemia together, when they are in fact two differnt medical conditions.

Can I ask, if your bm levels do get too low are the effects the same for a person diagnosed with hypoglycemia and one that is diagnosed with diabetes?

Again thanks

The difference between hypoglycemia and hypoglycemia in diabetics is your blood sugar level drops when you eat too much sugar and/or starch.

In diabetics, it's usually because they have too much insulin and didn't eat enough that day or the injected themselves with a higher dosage.

In both you will experience the same dizziness, confusion, shakes, etc. But you must treat it differently.

Read some of the posts on this board, they should give you more insight. Some hypoglycemics, after a period of following a stringent diet, can train their bodies to process sugars and starches properly. Keep in mind, not all hypoglycemics can do this. Hypoglycemics who have a family history of diabetes tend to have this condition permanantly, i've noticed.

Andy, how soon after the epilepsy episode were you diagnosed with hypoglycemia?

A more hardcore version of my diet is actually used to treat epilepsy.
