Q: Iud, General Info

Hello. I am 42 years of age and have been on the pill since I was about 19. Recently I have had to go onto the mini pill which has caused me some problems so I am considering having an iud fitted. I have been for a consultation with gp and had all the swabs taken etc.

I have heard all the horror stories of heavy painful periods, pain having the iud fitted, iud coming out etc, but my gp has assured me that it is a reliable and popular method of birth control.

It really appeals to me as it is long term (hubby not keen on having the snip).

I have more or less made up my mind but would love to hear a few more positive experiences please.

Thanks

I don't have an iud but I have the mirena ius - very similar but it has a very low dose of hormone in (i've had problems with most other kinds of contraception before this). It's there for 5years, I don't have periods and I don't even know it's there!

There are horror stories with birth control pills too... Birth control is not "one size fits all", different women will react differently to certain methods.

I have a iud and love it, I would never take another hormonal method again..(i really can't actually)

haliparot, an 18 year old woman with no kids or pregnancies, just had an iud fitted and says 'so far so good'...

You never know until you try it.

Thanks for your replies.

All my tests came back clear and I have booked to have my iud fitted on the 6th september, advised to take painkillers before the event just incase.

Fingers crossed.

Thanks again

I've had an iud since 6 weeks after my 19 mo. Was born. Mine is the 10 yr, not the 5, i'm not sure which one you're going for. I hear the 5 yr. Can actually lighten and sometimes stop your period entirely. With the ten year, my periods are heavy and usually bi-monthly or longer than a month between (which can be nerve racking since I already have 2 children at a young age). The placement was uncomfortable, scary (only because I didn't know anyone who had it placed and had no knowledge of how painful it might be) but suprisingly not painful. It was rather quick. I was not advised to take pain medication, so your experience should be even better. Good luck.

thanks for that.

The one I am having is the 5 year one so I will ask about that, it will be great not having to worry about taking a pill every day.

Thanks again for info.

Carifairy,

that sounds awful, when you say you bled for a year and a half are we talking like a real period or light spotting. I would have given up after 6 months and had it removed if that was the case.
