Hi guys I have been in hospital since monday for further tests for hypoglycemia. On tuesday I was put on a starvation diet for 24 hours to induce a hypo. Now I knew I was going into a hypo but my glucose level was 3.5 aparently to the doctors its not low enough for a hypo for a normal person. I am completely annoyed with this because 1 I am not a normal person I weigh 6 stone something im 22 and I have coeliacs which explains the lack of weight and my weight has always been stable.

After lots of tests the only thing they could tell me is that I have gilberts desiease (excuse spelling) and they want me to see a nurologist. I explained to the doctors time and time again I have never lost consiousness when ive had the shakes and usually the symptoms go after about 10 mins with the aid of sugary drink and the some food. They have also told me I cannot drive until I have seen the nurologist now I dont know if your aware but having to wait for the nhs to book you an appointment there is like a 6 month waiting list and if I go private its a month.

Another thing which annoys me is they never actually monitored my sugar level one the fist day monday they checked it once, on the tuesday (starvation day) check it twice one mid day and one about 10pm. On the wednesday they checked it 5am when I was expierencing the hypo symptoms and never checked it again. And then today they checked it just after breakfast 10.9 now that is the highest its ever been!

I am really not happy with the lack of listening from my consultant what can I or would you do.

Apologies for the rant

Im sorry to hear that your having problems. From my understanding, in order to get the results on hypoglycemia you have to do a gtt which is a fasting blood withdraw, then you drinkng the glucose orange stuff, then blood is withdrawn 30 min later, then 1 hour later, then another 1 hour later, and another hour and one more. It okay to do a 3 hour test but some people dont have drops into there 5 th hour. They need to see how fast ur sugar is dropping and also how low. From what u wrote there checking it each day. All that may do is find if you are diabetic but you still need a gtt. Its worth it do get that done so you have it right in front of you and see what ur sugar is doing. Im sure stan will help u on this also.

Gilbert's disease?!!!!!!!!! Ahhah ahahahhh hahhha hahaha hahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa haha ahhaahaha ahaha hahaha ah!!!!!! Tell me you're kidding. That disease is totally benign and doesn't even do anything really other than give you mild jaundice. Passing out has nothing to do with it and if you're messing with doctors like that you need to find new ones as soon as possible. The starvation diet will only induce fasting hypoglycemia, not reactive. In fact, most reactives that fast will find they feel good because their bodies are not causing drops because of the lack of food. Not driving is possibly advisable in your condition, I couldn't drive for several months when I was in your shoes. If you can't have the gtt done, as he mentions it there, the only thing you can do is eat correctly, based on my diet or the hai diet, and see what happens. It's pretty much a self test, but you absolutely cannot be eating sugar on it anymore. Expect a terrible, awful crash and feeling like you're going to die for several days, if not weeks. I'm warning you now so when it happens you don't think you're losing it. You need to eat right!
