Q: Is This Ocd???

I live in the projects with my mother, father, little brother and grandfather. We have been here for four years this september. I am afraid my mother (she's 41) had developed ocd while we have lived here.
My mother had always had problems with stress in her life. She is the only one that keeps up the housework without the help of my father. She also has to take care of my grandfather (her father.) he is always in a terrible mood, (he is 83).
Lately she has been obsessed with bugs and dust. She suspects spiders are in the curtains. She constantly cleans and sprays raid and cleaning products. She uses rollers (commonly used for pet fur and such) to pick up everything she see's thats 'dirty.' we own a guinea pig and she is afraid to touch him because she thinks she has some sort of bug on him all the time.
This has developed in the past year or so. She does not have a job and stays in the house all the time with my grandfather. She is so confined because this is a small project. She want to leave here so badly.
I am afraid her compulsive cleaning is ocd. Can anyone help me?

Yes it sounds that way to me. I sometimes get ocd about bacteria and stuff and constantly wash my hands. I think stress really makes ocd's worse. I am convinced that just about everybody has ocd about something in life.

According to Aboutmh.Com
"a diagnosis of ocd requires the obsessions and or compulsions take a significant amount of time (usually at least one hour per day), and interfere with the person’s daily functioning in social and professional activities or in relationships." source aboutmh.Com
hope this helps

Compulsive cleaning is the classic OCD. They have made TV shows about this, one being "Monk." But that is not the only diagnosis that fits your mom. My first qustion is why don't you give the poor lady a break. Give her a time out anywhere. It doesn't have to be expensive but it can be somewhere. Living in the Projects I am sure there isn't a lot of money to work with.

Here is a couple of other diagnosis she could fit under.

Arachnophobia - Fear of spiders.

Ataxophobia - Fear of disorder or untidiness.

Entomophobia - Fear of insects.

Insectophobia - Fear of insects.

Mysophobia - Fear of dirt and germs

Amathophobia Fear of dust.

Koniophobia Fear of dust. (Amathophobia)

I just wanted to comment on this. This is not really true. There is another form of OCD that is called Pure O where the patient actually has only obsessions and no compulsions. It is another form of OCD and is considered an anxiety dissorder as well. Just food for thought. Compulsions are not required.

Later,
OE
