Q: Diverticulitis - Post Surgery Problems

I am a 33 year old male, 2 years ago I was admitted to hospital with acute diverticulitis with an abcess that had perforated my colon wall. Peritonitis had set in and I was in big trouble. I didn't know I had the disease, my doctor told me that it was hereditary, I later found out that my father had it and decided not to tell anyone.

I had a left hemi-colectomy and was in hospital for about 7 days, after getting out I went through about 8 weeks of trying to get back to normal and since then everything has been pretty good. Before the surgery I would suffer through fairly violent stomache cramps 3-4 times a week and had done so since I was about 18.

I have found diet to be a major factor in how I feel post-surgery. I have also found that my digestive system is much more sensitive to foods. I am wondering if anyone else has found this post surgery. Also, I have found that I am passing alot of acidy stool, that produces something like diaper rash around the anus. Is this normal? Sometimes the anus "leaks", for lack of a better term, and i'm not sure if this is a side effect of my surgery, it's really embarassing but I can't stop it.

Adam,

Thanks for your post. I've had the same experience as you, working on my diet to help keep my diverticulitis in check.

I'm particularly sensitive to red meat. Why, I don't know. Maybe it's just too hard to digest.

I kept a detailed log of everything I ate for a couple of years, and kept track of my symptoms. That helped me identify what worked and what didn't. Maybe it would help you, too?

Post diverticulitis problems
I am also suffering with post surgery problems very similar to the ones you listed. I am curious what kind of diet you are following, and if it's helping any. My surgery was December, 2008. My pain is all gone, lots of gas, and some 'leakage' that kind of burns. Thanks for any ideas!

Lactobacillius
Hello,

I'm 27 years old. I didn't have a surgery, but have exactly the same problems with anus, bowels. I have gases, and it hearts a lot. Almost the same problems has my elder sister. She is 35. exactly the same simptoms. She is more brave then me, she went to the doctor. We were thinking that may the problem is in leaver, or even some cancer. but no...thanks God, it was just disbacteriosys. Lack of lactobacillius and bifido bacterium. My sister was advised to take "Lacto El Dena". It is the only medicine which contains the exact amount of lactobacillus acidophilus and bifido bacterium, that our bowels microflore needs. So may be you could also try it. may be it'll help you as well as my sister??
