I have a 4 yr old son and have been trying to get pregnant again for the past 3 months. 2 months back, I started getting stomach cramps and breast tenderness and enlargement one week before the expected date of my monthly periods. I thought these were the signs of pregnancy. I missed my periods, but the pregnany test was negative. I had lots of backache and in the 5th week, I got my periods, which was heavier than usual.

When I visited my gynaecologist, she had a blood test done for, lh, fsh, hcg, and tsh. My lh and fsh were in the normal range. Hcg was < 2. But, my tsh was 7.82. My ultrasound test result was also normal. And, the doctor told me that I was not pregnant.

I had a follow-up test done for tsh after a month and got a value of 5.79. My physician refused to give me any medication since the value was just a little over the normal range.

I have a history of irregular periods but the last month I got my periods at exactly 29 days.

We were actively trying to get pregnant this month but I got my periods after exactly 29 days after severe breast tenderness, stomach cramps, and leg cramps. I am very disappointed. Do you think, since, my tsh value is little high that I didn't conceive this month? Can you give me your advice?

I have heard if you are not getting prego at normal TSH which is more than 2, Hypothyroid might be the reason. It should optimally be between 1 and 2 or 1.5. Also if it is affecting you adversely, it may cause the baby to have a little bit low IQ.

According to some docs, the normal range of TSH is .3 to 3, not 5 or 7. Also it is .3 to 3 in the absence of symptoms. If a person's TSH is normal but she has symptoms screaming of hypo, she should be treated. It is hard to find a doc who would consider these new trends though.

Do some research online, print out a few research papers and show them to your doc. Your TSH might be the reason if you also have other symptoms, (u feel cold, hair falling out, weight gain etc) that you have difficulty getting preg. Or it might not be the problem.

Talk to your doc and see. Good luck
