Q: Diagnosis of Jaw Problem

New User, Becoming EHEALTHy
Could you tell me how I would know if in my jaw the joint was out of alignment or if it could be a disc displacement or just a stretched ligament?
I have no pain as of yet but even eating tuna causes popping noise on the left side...

I had a piece of food caught in my back bottom teeth and tried to get it out with my fingers, didnt have my mouth fully opened and when my finger went in my jaw cracked really loud.
Now it cracks when I move it and especially if I push on the opposite side of my jaw while opening it.
Also while eating now it pops eating even soft foods.
I can see my jaw sliding to the right slightly and back to the left when it pops.
Will this go away or just get worse?

Yes, it can go away. You probably did stretch the disc out of place a little bit. The cracking noise most likely is the disc slipping in and out over the condyle area as you open your jaw. I am not a medical person, just a long-time tmjer who has done a lot of research. So that is my disclaimer. :)

if I were you, I would rest my jaw as much as possible for a few weeks to months. No talking, liquid diet if even soft foods make it pop, no opening the mouth for any purpose, if at all possible. Use ice on both sides to reduce any internal swelling that there might be (even the side that is not popping). Use moist heat when you want to relax. Relax your body, especially shoulders. When we get stressed, our shoulders ride up, which puts undo pressure on the jaw joints (it's all connected.) try not to thrust your chin forward while on the computer if you are doing so. Keep your head back and chin down. Another strain on the tmj.

If you think you are grinding or clenching your teeth at night, you might want to go to a tmj dentist and get this straightened out before you start developing pain. Keep with simple and conservative treatments until you have researched tmj like crazy.

I will pray that you get the right help that you need now. You can live your life with your jaw cracking occasionally while eating, but be careful about stressing the jaw muscles, ligaments, cartilage disc, tendons, etc. You do not want to develop painful tmj.

God bless...
Carol
