I am a 21 year old female and I had a baby last october. I had no complications with my pregnancy and everything went very well. I had 12 weeks off of work and when I went back I started to have problems. The night before I had to go to work I was very anxious and had trouble falling asleep. I noticed I had a "heaviness" or "pressure" on the left side of my chest. I went to the doctor and he had a chest xray done and he saw nothing and it was painful to breath. He said I had pleurisy. He gave me antibiotics and most of the severe symptoms went away, but not completely, I still worried that it wasn't what he was telling me. About a month later the symtoms came back and I went to the er. They did another chest xray and said I had a little pneumonia in my right lung, which I had such a hard time believing because I only had pain on my left side. They gave me an antibiotic and stronger ibuprofen. The symptoms went away. Then I had the symptoms come back about a month later and I went to the doctor again. He told me that it was stress and anxiety and probably a little post partum. I just feel funny and these symptoms are real and I just have a hard time believing it is just stress. Then about a month later my symptoms came back but this time my left arm had a tingling feeling like it was half numb half not. Its hard to explain. Then I felt pressure on the left side of my neck and sometimes I feel like the left side of my face is kind of numb. This gets worse when I am stressed. One of my friends recommended I see a chiropractor. I went and she adjusted me and I felt completely normal. Then about a month later my symptoms came back. I went back to the chiropractor and I was more stressed and frustrated because she couldn't get me adjusted to feeling normal. She told me that your body takes longer to heal when you are stressed. I was very stressed because my baby's father decided to walk out on us and I know it was taking a huge toll on my body, but it is pretty amazing how bad it can make you feel if this is really just stress. I went to the er again and they did tests on my heart and another chest xray and again nothing. They said it was anxiety and perscribed me prozac and xanax. Again my symptoms are numbness feeling on my left side of my body (face, neck, shoulder, arm, chest), hard to breath on left side (at times), sometimes I feel burning and pain. My left jaw hurts sometimes. Its just a miserable feeling and I don't know what to do anymore. I feel weaker on my left side and sometimes it hard for me to take care of my daughter. Please I need help any suggestions?????

I am not a doctor but if I were you, I would go see a neurologist. It sounds like you have anxiety, and all these symptoms would be related to it. However it could also be due to your lungs, or maybe a disc problem in your neck. I too am have some of the same symptoms but they are on both sides of my face and hands. I have mild scoliosis and very bad tmj and anxiety disorder.

Koa,
I am no doctor but it seems to me that you are suffering from postpartum depression, a common problem among women after giving birth. You'd be suprised how many symptoms can actually be caused by stress and anxiety, which are in fact very real but people suffering from stress tend to worry about the way they are feeling more than others would do which in turn increases stress, bodily symptoms etc. It's a vicious cycle. That said, it was very wise seeking professional medical advice of which you may or may not feel reassured with. As for the "pressure" in you neck, the most likely cause would be tension and knotted muscles again influenced by stress. This is further justified by you saying that it gets worse during stressful events and that you felt back to normal after visiting a chiropractor. Another suggestion would be your thyroids (a hormonal gland in your neck) which seems completely understandable due to the hormonal changes in your body after pregnancy. However, it would be an idea to get a medical opinion to rule out more sinister causes. In the mean time, i've fished out a couple of websites that you might want to take a look at:

i hope you find this reassuring.

All the best,

james

Thank you so much!! I wanted to give you an update...I saw a massage therapist last monday and she said she could feel all the tension in my muscles on my left side. After the session I could breathe so much better and I slept awesome that night. I don't think I have slept that well in probably two years. I'm going back tomorrow night and I can't wait to get to that relaxed state. I did see an orthopedic and he did an mri and he confirmed nothing was wrong that it must be my muscles. After my massage...I am finally starting to believe the doctors. I have been dealing with this feeling since may and it is wonderful to finally start to see the "light" and the end of the tunnel. I can see why I was under so much stress. The whole time I was pregnant my babys dad was out and about on me and treated me like crap, but then tried to be there when I had her. And then he ended up leaving anyone and now he's engaged to someone else. Also besides him I had to adjust to motherhood and being a single mom, working and going to school. Plus grieving over her father and being single again. Now I am finally feeling like me again and it feels wonderful. You are right this is a vicious cycle...But today was a good day. Thanks again for all your help!

Anxiety describes any feeling of worry or dread, usually about events that might potentially happen. Some anxiety about stressful events is normal. However, in some people, anxiety interferes with the ability to function.

St. John's wort extract helps to maintain a steady mood and promotes good mental function in the treatment of anxiety disorder. Hops extract and valerian extract can act as a sedative and help to cause sleep and lessen anxiety and tension. Take valerian extract 30 minutes before bedtime. Skullcap extract has been used historically as a sedative for people with nervous tension and insomnia which may be helpful in the treatment of anxiety disorder. Chamomile extract contains active constituents that contribute to smooth-muscle relaxing action. People with anxiety disorder (also known as nervousness, panic attacks) are often deficient in essential nutrients, including calcium, magnesium, b vitamins. Zinc is an essential mineral that is a component of enzymes that protect against free radicals caused by anxiety whic may be important in the treatment of anxiety disorder.

Please note that this is not to be taken as medical advice. If you are seeking treatment, please contact your healthcare professional.
