Extreme Lower Back Pain Posted: 08-05-06 08:43am
Three days ago, I started getting stuffed
up, coughing up phlegm, and I had a
moderately sore throat. I tried to stave
off the sickness with oj and some
'airborn' drink my housemate had, but
within 24 hours, I was wicked sick, and I
completely lost my voice.
I just got my voice back this morning, but
starting last night, i've been having
excruciating back pain, right behind my
'sacral dimple' (i just learned this term
today, thanks to the internet). Pressing
my finger there introduces a world of hurt
that I can't even describe. Doing pretty
much anything hurts, walking, sitting,
standing up, coughing, going to the
bathroom, even if I find a way to sit
comfortably, some involuntary muscle
twitching/tightening in my lower back
still causes pain, and I have to readjust
my seating.
Is this back pain possibly connected to
the laryngitis I just got over? What is
causing this pain, and what can I do about
it? I've had some minor back problems in
the past, but nothing on this level. It
it almost impossible for me to find a
position to put my body in that feels
natural and comfortable. It hurts
non-stop, and I don't know what to do.
Please, if anyone has any answers, say
something, thank you.

Boy, it sounds like you have been coughing
violently to have this happen to you.
First let me introduce myself. I am a
director of rehabiliation in new
hampshire, usa and unfortunately see all
sorts of back conditions in my practice.
It sounds like you have some lumbosacral
disc problems with potential sacral
dislocation and pubic coccygeal muscle
sprain. Does it hurt to have sex? Does
it hurt to urinate? Are you limping now?
Does it only hurt when sitting or is it
anguishing when lying down and walking
too? Do you have any position that
relieves the pain?
I suggest that you go see your doctor
about this at it can cause problems for
many months if bones are out of alignment.
The problem is correctable without
surgery, but some testing will be done,
xray, mri, and some therapy will certainly
be prescribed. Once your doctor gives you
a definitive diagnosis I can send some
handouts for home exercise to supplement
your therapy regimen. Although it could
be related to your coughing and sickness,
it likely started years ago and that was
just the "straw that broke the camels
back."
