Q: Baby Needs List...
asked by: Bridget on August 4th, 2006
Supporter
I already have most of the essentials like onesies, sleepers, receiving blankets, bottles, pacifiers, etc.

I just need a list or suggestions of what kinds of baby toiletries i'll need. Like medicines, soap, lotions... Stuff like that.

I know baby tylenol and the gas drops (do those have an actual name?), what else should I have on hand?

What brands of soap, shampoo, and lotion do you like best?

Thanks for any help!

I like whatever smells good for the soaps! As long as the baby doesn't have any sensitive skin issues, you can use anything. Find what you like best.

As far as the gas drops go, you can get the generic .Walmart brand. It is the .E.X.A.C.T same thing as the expensive name brand but way less expensive!!! Same goes with a lot of baby supplies, really.

Go to every website you can find (huggies, luvs, pampers, etc) and sign up for their coupons. Also formula sites (enfamil, etc). Get as many people sending you coupons as you can. That way, you'll have them if you need them!

Stock up on a few packs of diapers (if you are going to use disposables) beforehand, you don't want to run to the store with a new baby within the first few days of being home because you are out of supplies! ;)

do you have a thermometer? Nail clippers? I can't think of anything else. Film! And batteries!!

Thanks ingi!

So here's my list so far... Anything I should add?

Formula
diapers
wipes
a&d
gas drops
baby tylenol
nail clippers
medicine spoons/syringes
cotton balls
baby wash
baby shampoo
baby lotion

luckily my husband works at the hospital i'll be delivering at so he gets a huge discount on medicines and diapers are practically free ($20 for a 240 pack of pampers brand!).

Oh, i'm a q-tip addict that's why they're not on my list. I use them every day.

Question, I know i'll need q-tips and cotton balls but what will I be needing them for?

Oh, and I already have an awesome ear thermometer and one of those snot-sucker bulbs that's why those aren't on my list either.

Q-tips are for the outter ear area. I never used cottom balls...So I don't know what they are for.

Q-tips are also good for cleaning around that stump of a umbilical cord. That thing gets stinky and you need to keep it clean.

There are also other things people say you need, but I never found a use for. Like baby oil? Who wants to oil up a baby and make them slipperier? Or vaseline? What is that stuff for?

You need vaseline if you are going to use an anal thermometer. It makes things go a lot smoother.

I've read that you're supposed to use cotton balls instead of baby wipes when the baby has diaper rash. Same thing goes for baby oil... It's supposed to help easily clean a sticky bowel movement off of a sore baby bottom, as well as treat cradle scalp.

I have a "thing" about touching cotton balls, though, so i'll have to find an alternative way. I just... Can't do it. *shudder*

i don't think I could bring myself to stick something in my baby's bum! We spent a small fortune on a quick-reading ear thermometer.

Right. I forgot about baby oil for cradle cap...

And you only need vaseline if you are using an anal thermometer. They have those wonderful ear ones now ;)

About the q-tip thing...Jaces peditrician told me not to clean his ears out with them because they just bury the ear wax further into the ear and can cause infections easier...--he cleans them with this instrument on his check-ups and he said thats the best thing for them..--but you can always take a warm cloth and wash the outer area and a little on the inside(the part that is seen)..But thats just the info I got from the doc...But different people believe and do different things ...So whatever floats your boat...But just to mention ..Jace is one year and has only had 2 ear infection..And if ya ask me thats good..Lol

oh adults aren't supposed to stick .Q-tips in their ears either! Not in the ear canal, just on the outter area of the ear - that squiggly part.

Yeah I know we arent suppose to but most people do...Eventhough its not good --it wouldnt hurt adults as much as it would babys...--he just made sure that I didnt ...Because he said it would lessen his chances of ear infections...And its worked out so far..But seriously if he wouldnt have told me this I would have been sticking the q tip in there a long time ago to clean out his wax..Lol

I'll admit i'm one of the people who sticks q-tips in my ears. Mostly because I can't stand the feeling of water in my ears after a shower but I never have any wax either. I must have the cleanest ears in town! I would never ever stick them in my baby's ears though. I'd be afraid i'd stick them in too far or do some sort of damage. That's what I figured cotton balls were for, cleaning around the part you can see.

I can't see myself using cotton balls to wipe them when there's a rash or something. Wouldn't that be messy and take forever? I thought i'd just rinse the alcohol or whatever out of the wipes with warm water or even use a washcloth. Those baby washcloths are so soft.

i'm honestly not sure! That's what my "what to expect" book says. I have a thing about touching cotton balls, so I probably won't use them either. I can touch things made out of cotton, but the texture of actual cotton balls has always bothered me. I'm a freak. :(

all of the baby books ive read and our ped. Says the only way to get an accurate temp with a baby under 4 months is by using a thermometer anally. Its really not that big of a deal, especially if youve had a contipated baby and you have to use suppositories and/ or the end of a q tip w/vaseline just to get them to poop!

I love the .Johnson's & .Johnson's lotions, body wash & shampoos!!!

You'll need vaseline if you choose to have your son circumcised too.

honestly I felt the same way so I made jon's mom do it the first couple times, but then I had to do it. It really isn't that horrible and it doesn't bother ethan at all.

where I am from we use the cotton balls to swab the alcohol on the navel string.....It does double duty by keeping the area clean and sanitary as well as help the navel string dry up and drop off quicker. But you can skip the cotton balls if you have alcohol wipes.

actually the baby oil is supposed to be rubbed on your baby right after his/her bath b.E.F.O.R.E. You dry him/her off......This keeps the skin very moisturised and you will not need lotion afterwards. I actually use this method after my baths as well, and there is no greasy feeling afterwards just soft, smooth, moisturised skin.
