Choresterol Test
Posted: 08-02-06 13:32pm

From about early april, i've been feeling incredibly good with so much energy that I cannot believe I have hypoglycemia. As a matter of fact, i've never had so much energy all my life.

Anyway, my concern now is that I got choresterl tested today, and despite my choresterol panel has been great, this time, the results shows my ldl(bad choresterl) is 128, highest ever! My ldl(good choresterol) is 57, still good, but was 68 a year ago. I'm very shocked. I wonder if this is because I eat eggs everyday and definitely more cheese than before hypoglycemia.

I have to tell you though, that the test was done 2.5 hours after I ate an egg, lettuce and spinach, half a carb-balance tortilla(6g carbs) and a slice of processed cheese and that the test was administered at a pharmacy with a small choresterol test machine, something like a glucose meter. The pharmacist told me that the test result should be on fatty side since I didn't fast and ate those stuff before the test.

Have any of you had your choresterol leverl raised because of the diet changes? I know I should fast before the test, but I was scared to go too long without eating. But should I fast anyway?

I wouldn't worry. Cholestrol problems are only a problem if over a long, extended period of time, like years and years. Remember, this diet isn't forever. In addition, levels of cholestrol are different for everyone. Increasing olive oil in your diet should bring the bad down, you can also look into other foods that do the same thing. I understand your concern because i've had it, but remember, the diet isn't forever, you will eventually be adding back in carbohydrates and then will find a level you like for yourself where this shouldn't be a problem. Also, I don't think a test like that is reliable enough, you'd have to get it done at the doctor using actual blood samples, I would trust that more, it's just like going to get your blood pressure tested with one of those store machines, not as accurate or reliable. I'm not sure, but eating so soon before may have skewed the results as well.

Thank you, stan. I think you're right. I'm sure eating before the test did sckew the resutls, so I try not to worry. But I don't really like having high bad chresterol level, so I will cut down on cheese and eggs and maybe, half and half I put in my decaf coffee.

In terms of adding carbs back into my diet, i'm really nervous about it as I enjoy good health right now. I eat one to one and a half tortillas(12g carbs each with 8g of fiber) a day and some berries.

Are you eating any grains right now? As I said, i've been feeling really great lately, so I will start eating probably some brown rice soon.

Nope, still no grains, I don't feel ready yet. I think I have, well had, a very, very severe case, my body seems uber sensitive to any change in this regard. Brown rice is going to be the first thing I try.
