If this is in the wrong forum then I apologise and please move it.

I have read that you work in an abortion clinic and I just wondered whether you ever feel affected by your work? Do you personally do abortions or assist with them? Please don't get me wrong, i'm not having a go at you, i'm just interested as it's not a job a lot of people do and I wondered what it is like. Do people ever treat you differently when they find out what you do?

I imagine it's nice to be helping so many people through a traumatic time in their lives but you must also have had to develop a thick skin to deal with so many emotional circumstances.

If you'd rather not answer me I totally understand, i'm not intending this to turn into a carifairy bashing session, i'm just interested to hear from the horse's mouth so to speak!

I apologise if I have caused any offence and if I have I will delete my post immediately.

Hello =)

i am not the doctor, so I do not actually perform the baortion itself. I do assist though, I pass surgical tools, and empty the fetal tissue that has been terminated..I clean too =)...All part of the job..

Nowdays, most women choose to be asleep or have iv sedation, so there is not a lot of handholding or explaining stuff to women during the procedure. Some women are awake, and I would need to assist them so there are no surprises, but usually they are hgih as a kite.

I am very emotionally sound and stable, so the job does not affect me negatively at all.

Many women know that theyw ant an abortion, so they do not seem sad or dishelved about the situation. Some women are very upset though, and they need a lot more support.

I feel good about my job, I believe strongly in what I do! I also volunteer on online support forums, and volunteer as a rideshare. I will offer transportation to women who may not have a ride, or access to a car.

While my clinic does not perform abortions, i'd still like to answer a few of your questions from my public affairs perspective.

I was and am affected by my work on a daily basis but not in the way that some people would hope. Everyday I unfortunately see with my own eyes why my work and the work that cari performs is necessary. Everyday I see women in desperate need of education, medical care, and assistance. Everyday I see abused women, uninformed women, and women who just can't catch a good break. I feel honored that they come to me, that they trust us, and that they continue to come back to us everytime they need help. So, everyday I am supported in what I do by what I see. I know that I am doing the right thing everyday that I get to help other women in their time of great need.

it's hilarious. When I tell people where I work, there is a moment of hesitation when they just stare at me. The majority of people, however, are very, very positive and interested in the work that I perform. There have only been a few who have had nasty things to say and they were so ill informed about the entire organization that I really couldn't blame them. If all I had heard were negative things about the salvation army, I wouldn't support them either despite all the good that they do. A few people have that impression of my clinic simply because they are not aware of what we do.

i've only had to develop a thick skin on the internet or when i'm reading the newspaper or watching the news. The ignorance about what goes on irritates and angers me but in my day to day contact with people, it's really not present at all.

Thanks for this opportunity to answer your very good questions. People assume that other people treat me like crap for working where I work but I really don't experience much of that.

Thank you jenn for your input. It's a subject that I will admit to being very ignorant of but very interested to know more about as it's all too easy to rely on stereotypes.
