Q: Blowing Your Nose...

This is new to me, but i've been told by a paramedic that blowing your nose can be detrimental to getting rid of a cold quickly. He said that blowing your nose forces more mucus into your sinusses risking more infection. He actually said, and this grosses me out, that sucking it back into your mouth and spitting is better than blowing your nose.

I want to know if this is true or not, and if it is true, could someone point me in the right direction of a reference or two? Thanks!
