Q: Conceiving With a Varicocele

Hello, i'm danielle. I've been on the birth control pill yasmin for the past 6 months. I've been with my boyfriend for nearly a year now and i've found out some disturbing news. He has a varicocele (swollen varicose vein in the scrotum) i've educated myself on this and the odds of him being able to father children seem low  which is devestating to both of us. I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience with this problem or any words of advice. I have decided to stop taking the pill since I don't see much point of it and i'm paying for it with money out of my pocket. I am young and certainly not looking to concieve at this time but i'd like to know if when the time comes (2 years or so) if i'll be able to concieve. I know there's no sure way to tell but it would be nice to have some hope. At this time we're both feeling pretty hopeless. Thank you for your comments in advance :)

Google varicocele. I did when you asked your first pregnancy question and there is an easy procedure to 'fix' it.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. But I knew there was a way to fix it but my boyfriend doesn't have insurance so at this point having the surgery is out of the question. So i'm wondering what are the odds of conceiving without having the repair?

That would totally depend on the severity of his case. I'm not sure anyone but a fertility doctor could tell you what the actual chances are.

Hi my partner has a vericocele our doctor first told us that it usually isn't a problem unless there is a low sperm count the normail sperm would have 20 million my partner had a sperm count done and only has 5 million so for us things are good without surgery he's having surgery later on this year and his chances should increase dramatically, I also have endometriosis so my chances alone are slim I remember what it was like when we first found out you feel like your whole world has just fallen apart but things get better if his sperm count is ok then things should be fine maybe have him see his doctor for a sperm count then you may not have to worry. Best of luck darl
