Hello, I am new to this forum and am
looking for some support and input on
other peoples experience with this mental
disorder. My father was diagnosed with
bipolar I disorder when he was in his
early twenties and has had episodes on and
off since then. I am currently in my
twenties and am experiencing his mania
first hand and it is hitting me harder
than ever. He becomes very hyper and
religious when he is manic and will travel
throughout the world with money that he
does not have to spend. He is actually
currently in jail after becoming agitated
one evening and threatening individuals.
He had preached to me that he is jesus and
never believes that he is manic when he
actually is. He also doesn't seem to care
about anyone but himself when he is manic.
Since he is in jail, they will not give
him his lithium so his mania is getting
even worse. I was wondering if anyone can
relate to the things that I have
experienced. If anyone has bipolar i, do
you remember the things that you do when
you become manic? My father tends to
forget a lot of the horrible things that
he does during his mania and it is very
difficult to deal with. It seriously
feels like he is on drugs when he is
manic, do you think that is an adequate
analogy? I thank you for listening and
for anybodies input.
Sincerely,
confused and currently feeling
'fatherless'

Looks like you will need to tell the
officials in jail that he really needs his
medication, so that he wont go in to the
deep end. You need to get that done
first. My wife is a bipolar and she has
been in the manic stage a while and went
on the spending spree and thinks that she
could heal people, with her special gifts
and etc...She is finally getting the help
that she needs, but had to be done by
commiting her. I know how you feel and I
have been there and now stock with a bunch
of bills. The only thing that I know to
tell you is that do what it takes for your
dad to get regular on his meds..That's the
only thing that would help him now and
dont let up...He will thank you one day.
After all, he will always be your dad and
he will always love you. Another thing
is that, once he gets out of jail, try and
take him back to his doctor and get him
re-evaluated. Sounds like he may have
other issues and may need to be put on
diffrent meds.
Good luck to you and will be thinking
about you and please pray for my wife
also.
