My 18 year old daughter recently had a few days of feeling weak, tired, mild stomach pain, some mild heart palpitations, and had dry heaves. By about the fifth day, she was jaundiced with yellow eyes. We had blood drawn and the results were negative for mono, hep a, and hep b. Her total bilirubin was 4.8, alk phosphatase was 239, sgpt was 291, & sgot was 298. A week later, her total bilirubin has dropped to 1.4, alk phosphatase has dropped slightly to 229, but her sgot has now climbed to 442, and her sgpt has also climbed to 469. The strange thing is that she is feeling great now.
My doctor is acting very unconcerned, calling it some kind of virus and wanting to just repeat the blood work later. After doing my own research, I have requested an ultrasound to rule out pancreatitis, problems with the gallbladder, or possibly some other obstruction to the bile duct.
Do you have any other suggestions what we should be checking for? These numbers are very frightening to me, but my doctor feels it's probably just something viral that is of no danger. We didn't rule out hep c, but since she's feeling so well, I would find that highly unlikely.
Any ideas?
