Third Trimester of Pregnancy Answer A1263
Medical terminology defines "miscarriages" for fetal death that occurs before the 20th week of pregnancy. After the 20th week of pregnancy (in the third trimester), women the experience "preterminal" (premature) births or "intrauterine deaths". Symptoms of preterminal birth are: regular contractions (lasting 30 seconds) every 5-8 minutes, cervical opening larger than 2cm ,and pain in the abdomen and sacrum. Symptoms of intrauterine death are: loss of fetal movements and soft breasts. Ultrasound and cardiotockography are used for identifying intrauterine death. The risk of preterminal birth is higher in your case because of a history of previous preterminal births...but you can begin to think positively about carrying this baby to term.
