Hi,

since it's been so hot here in so. Calif, i've been retaining lots of fluid (edema) and my menopausal symptoms have been worse....More hot flashes and palpitations. When I cut back on sodium I lose the water and can actually lose about 3-4 pounds and feel much better. Does anyone have the same problem and is there anything else that can be done to avoid this? I know hormones play a big part in water retention.

Menopausal Edema
I am going crazy with menopausal edema. My right ankle swells more than my left and the bloating makes me feel crappy all over. Diuretics dont help a bit so i don't bother with them. I drink fluids all day long to help flush it out but to no avail. This started in perimenopause each month before my period. I never even had swelling in my ankles when I was pregnant. I have no cardio or kidney issues and have had 2 ultrasounds of the veins and arteries from my groin to my feet and no blockages found. I even had a Dr tell me I had lymphodema but in researching it found that not to be true. As soon as the week goes by when I would have menstruated the swelling is gone. Other than this I have had no other symptoms other than cessation of my periods. If anyone has any ideas let me know before lose my mind! Smile

Hello,
Do you restrict your sodium intake at all? I found that this helps to some degree. Do you have varicose veins in your legs? That also can cause swelling in your ankles. I've yet to find a real solution to the swelling so any comments would be appreciated.

Acupuncture might be of benefit. It could easily be a break in your meridians. Not sure if you believe in alternative medicine or not. It could also be a lymphatic drainage problem.
