Q: Diagnosing Severe Stomach Pain
asked by: DoctorQuestion on July 23rd, 2006
Ive had 2 endscopies and a cat scan for sever stomach pains that im getting. all came back fine. however in the cat scan i dont think it went high enough to where the pain is.

the pain is between my ribcages, just below my sternum.when its really bad it goes around my right ribcage and into my back. i need to bend over, hold my breath and press where the pain is until it passes. my stomach gets bloated and swollen and im feeling nauseous,. my docs have now said that my stomach isnt the problem and wannt to rule out pancreatitis and gallstones, so im wondering if there is anything else you could think of that it could be.

i seldom drink, i dont smoke and im 113lbs. ive lost 25lbs witht his so far. appetite is v low as its hurting me all the time. im not able to sleep at night either

thank you!!

It seems to me that you may first exclude gallstones as a possible cause for your symptoms. To do this, you can request an abdominal ultrasound. In fact, an abdominal ultrasound might be the first diagnostic procedure (instead of endoscopy and CAT-scan) for your symptoms because it is neither invasive nor harmful. To rule out pancreatitis, you can check the levels of the enzyme alpha-amylase in the blood.
