Q: Fast Pulse
asked by: stumars on July 23rd, 2006

Well it was my birthday the other day and I ended up having a few drinks to celebrate, first drinks in a few months. Anyway I tried to limit my drinking and watched what I drank, and to my suprise I woke up today feeling pretty good. Last time I drank I was in bed for 2 days. The only problem was a pretty rapid pulse that lasted a few hours while in bed this morning. I guess that rapid pulse is a symtpom of hypolgycemia? And thats why it passed after a few hours. Is this pulse anything to be worried about? I think my pulse is usually about 60bpm, but this morning it had to be a good 100bpm

Hey stumars
the exact thing happens to me. My pulse is normally around 55 and the night after I have a drink or 2, my pulse is around 80 upon awakening. Even if I don't any sugar and have a sugar free drink (the mixer being sugar free), it still happens. Unless you have a pre-existing heart condition, it's not life threatening but I agree with stan, avoid alcohol for a while.
If you "must" have a drink or 2, I have found that what can reduce the palpitations (but not eliminate them) is to eat alot of fat and protein and no carbs while drinking.

Ok no worries, yeah I dont really plan on drinking its just not worth it. So the fast pulse is related to hypoglycemia though? And do you think this symptom will last forever, or should it go away after a few months

Shouldn't last that long at all. Two weeks at most. I mean, if it's just there and doesn't go away after two months, you might want to readjust the diet or get a check up to see if anyone is wrong.

Its going to be hard to tell how long it lasts though because it only happens if ive been drinking. And I wont be drinking very often at all.
I remeber the last time I drank heavily back in march I woke up with the same fast pulse. But havnt had it since because I havnt drank, well one or two occasions were I had a beer or two, and the sypmtoms from that didnt include the fast pulse.
So it onlys happend twice after a fair few drinks

Oh okay, if only after drinking that's just your body reacting to it. Nothing to worry about unless you drink too much and set yourself back again.
