Q: Clogged Ear From Flight

Last week I was on vacation oversees and I got a cold. It wasn't very bad, I only had a very mild stuffy nose on the way back. But as the plane was landing my right ear didn't pop! It just continued to grow more and more muffled until it was painful. Somehow I made it through the landing and it no longer hurt but it was impossible to hear out of my right ear.
For about 24 hours I couldn't hear out of it at all. Then one night it must've popped and since then I can hear out of it, but its still very, very muffled. It's been 4 days now since the flight and my right ear is still blocked without any sign of letting up. Can this be causing any damage or will it let up on its own? Anything I can do to help this?

Now you know why airline pilots don't fly when they have a cold.

I was in exactly the same situation as you, I caught a cold in south east asia and then decending rapidly on a flight into singapore both my ears clogged up and frankly I thought I have gone deaf.

It took a couple of days for the symptons to ease and nearly a month for my ears to return to normal.

I had a gp/md and ent check my ears for middle ear damage, but thankfully all was clear.

All they recommended I do is use a standard over the counter nasal spay (the same you may use to treat a cold - oxymetazoline hydrochloride based) which I believe did help.

If you travel alot be careful on aircraft that fly below 10,000 feet and consider carrying ear plugs (sometimes called ear-planes) to help control the pressure in your ears.

I doubt there was any damage done, but if you find the time I would certainly get your local gp/md to have a look.

Yeah Nothing Shoulda Happened
I have had that problem before, nothing to worry about. Your ears should return to normal in a couple days or a week or so.

My ears always get clogged as well when I have a cold because my sinuses are always messed.. They sometimes get muffled but eventually goes away like in a day or 2 once the nose clears up.

Try cleaning your deep nasal and middle ear passage (eustachian tube) with the Earadicator home remedy for clogged ears. It seems to me like it could help clear your ears. The remedy is Earadicator. Google it cause they will not let me post a link here, they think I am advertising. I only want to help people. I ask for no money for my cure. It is free on my web site- the instructions are long tho.
