I know this is a little late, but I wanted to give my opinion...
The avent is the best manual. I pumped for my son for 18 months because he had a cleft and other issues and couldn't nurse. I used the hospital grade medela double pump while I was at hospital with him the first two months, then when he came home, I had to rent it (boy did that suck--our bill was over a thousand bucks when I finished with it).
When I wasn't at home however, I used a manual called ignell-ameda, but i'm pretty sure they don't make it any more. (if you can find it though, it's very good too, and very inexpensive). At one point I borrowed my sil's avent, and I was amazed at how effective it was for a manual--and since I had never nursed (he was my first) I needed something really strong. I've used the avent now for both my daughters when I needed the odd supplemental bottle (thank god they could nurse normal) and it's awesome. I don't know exactly how much it is retail, and i'm in canada so prices are a little diff anyway, but I know I see them in the second hand kid stores for about 60-70$.
